Marty: Foles 'tough man' with great strengths

POSTED: Thursday, December 27, 2012, 1:26 PM

It's unlikely that Marty Mornhinweg will continue to be entrusted with the development of Nick Foles beyond this week, but the Eagles' offensive coordinator made it clear Thursday he feels the rookie quarterback has promise.

"You have to give him great credit" for throwing for 188 yards in the second half of Sunday's loss to the Redskins with a hairline fracture in his throwing hand, Mornhinweg said. "If you've tried to throw a ball with a broken hand, you know what that feels like. So he's a tough man. He's got some great, great strengths. He got some great experience this year, which is invaluable ... I know this -- he's got an excellent future in this league, because of all of these strengths that he has."

Foles will miss the season finale at the Giants because of the injury. Mornhinweg said Michael Vick, scheduled to start for the first time since suffering a concussion Nov. 11, looks "sharp, crisp. I suspect he'll play at a high level" against the Giants.

Asked to autopsy the season, Mornhinweg referred to close losses, and then snowballing injuries. "There's a line you cross" with injuries, he said.

"It looked like we were a pretty good football team" at 3-1, Mornhinweg said. "Then some things happened."

Special teams coordinator Bobby April said Bryce Brown was just OK in his second outing as kick returner, last week against the Redskins. April said he thinks Brown can be good with experience.

April said kicker Alex Henery, who made 22 field goals in a row at one point, probably didn't get more Pro Bowl consideration because he hasn't had chances to make long, dramatic game-winners.

Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles said he felt rookie DT Fletcher Cox was really coming on when he suffered a concussion Sunday that almost certainly will keep Cox out of the season finale.

Marty said the same of Kolb and Kalfka, woooohoooo. Remember Kolb was Texas tough now here comes another Texas tough guy let's see how long he lasts. Better draft Geno or Collin thats the Eagles best bet.

I don't know how this shakes out. None of us do. Aikman won one game his first year. Bradshaw was 3-5 with 6 TDs and 24 INTs. Elway was 4-6 with 7 TDs and 14 INTs. Steve young was 1-4 with 3 TDs and 8 INTs. The petty and shrill nature of these pages can be insufferable. Relax.

Brown as a kick returner is a fumble waiting to happen.

Morningweh is right: Foles is promising.

I think Foles can be a good QB, a full off season of work, a better/healthy O-line can only help this kid. I like his field presence, he is tough, doesn't seem to get rattled & is a pass first QB. Add a coach that is willing to run the ball & I think the Eagles will be going in the right direction. I hope that Chip Kelly is NOT the choice to replace Andy.

The Eagles need a lot more good players to round out the roster and add depth. I think Asante said it best last year when he made the comment that some of the Eagles in the front office think this is Fantasy football. Lurie needs a new head coach and GM.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all. Nothing is done til it is done, so let time play out on Foles before you judge him, and by the way some of us need to get a life.

Vick apologists somehow make their man crush on vick legitimate by bashing Foles. Kind of funny really, they are hanging on to an old wore down never has been player all because of a handful of highlight reel dynamic plays. What a sorry bunch they are. Its okay Vick apologists, if Foles doesnt pan out guess what. Vick still isnt any better than mediocre. If you cant see that you are not a true football fan, just a fanatic for one player.

The Giants obviously thought Eli could win SBs or else they would never have given up so much to get him. San Diego was devestated when they did not get him. I actually was never in love with Try-Boy in college and when he went 1-15 his rookie season I thought they were better off when they had Danny White (the former Tony Romo-all small victories no biggies) and boy was I wrong. It was only after the most overrated RB I've ever seen, Hershel Walker was traded for about a 1000 players, many in or soon to be in the Hall of Fame that we were able o see his talent. Without talent around you in the NFL you will lose and lose badly. Let's give the Kid and the next coaching staff a chjance before we run them out of town. the Kid did better tha I thought he would considering the O line taht we were forced to play with.
