Kolb flattered by Fitzgerald report

POSTED: Monday, February 14, 2011, 3:34 AM
Kevin Kolb said he was flattered by a report that Larry Fitzgerald wouldn't mind catching passes from him in Arizona. (Yong Kim/Staff Photographer)

A week ago, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Larry Fitzgerald had dropped Kevin Kolb's name when Cardinals' management talked to him about their future quarterback situation.

This week, during an interview with WIP's Howard Eskin and Ike Reese, Kolb said he was flattered that Fitzgerald would think so highly of him.

"I mean, if he's not the best, he's one of the best receivers in the NFL, superstar," Kolb said. "For a guy like that to say something about me, it means a lot. And it's awfully flattering, and I hope that if something happens, their name comes up."

Kolb has not gone into hiding this offseason. He talked to the Inquirer's Ashley Fox last week about what it felt like to watch Aaron Rodgers lead the Packers to a Super Bowl.

And before that, he did a national radio spot on the Dan Patrick show, reiterating his desire to start and describing the Clay Matthews hit that changed his season and really, his career.

During the WIP interview, Kolb was asked how he will respond if he's with the Eagles in a backup role next season. In 2010, he was the model teammate, but will Kolb be willing to sit quietly behind Michael Vick again in 2011?

"I've always had a good relationship with the Eagles. I think they understand my situation, I think they see where I'm coming from," Kolb said. "And you guys know this, it's not really in my makeup to go out there and cause a stink about things. That's just not what I do. I try to be as professional as possible and see both sides. I truly believe that they're going to try and do what's best for myself and the team, and if that doesn't work out, I obviously won't be happy about it. But in my opinion, it won't be their fault if it doesn't work out. I think it'll be because of the CBA not getting done. So if I get put in those shoes, just like I've done in the past and just like you have to do when you're in this league, you just roll with the punches and you say 'OK my turn is coming up.'

"You never know what's gonna happen with Mike. We've talked about every week, he runs around a lot so you gotta be ready to play. You never know how the year can go. We learned that this year, so if it comes up that way, then I'll go with it and make it work. But I obviously want to be starting somewhere and be number one."

Since the final whistle blew during the Eagles' playoff loss against the Packers, Kolb has been direct in saying that he wants to start next season. What's clear from the interviews is that the Eagles have not told Kolb they're definitely bringing him back in 2011, as some people have assumed. Kolb is on the hook for about $1.4M next season, and if the Eagles want to make a Super Bowl run, they'll need a backup quarterback that can win games.

But the sense I get is that they will look to trade him if they can find a deal they like, and if it's possible to get something done with the CBA.

If nothing is resolved by the time the draft rolls around, and the Eagles want to get picks in return for Kolb, they will have to settle for 2012 picks, not 2011 selections.

I think if the Eagles have a brain and they do ....and if they look to the future and they do...and they think about how Vick performed at the end of the year.....

OUR BRAIN TRUST WILL TRADE VICK while he is worth a boat load of draft Picks....Especially if our #3 Guy is showing the potential they have believed he has....KOLB is a lot better choice to take our Offense forward...

Why not Vick...He is 30..Maybe losing a step of his speed...short for a QB...Never learned to find Passing lanes instead leaves the pocket and runs...Teams have learned to force him to the left where he has trouble turning his body to throw...He does not see the field well over and over again I saw him pass up wide open receivers and throw into coverage...He doesn't see the field well or he just has poor judgement....

Bigmike, what are you talking about? "...our #3 Guy...?" Mike Koffka? Please! He will continue to be a back up. The Mike Vick Experience got the Falcons to the NFC Championship game but the Eagles were destined to be in the Super Bowl that year so that derailed him. Mike Vick can get us back to the Super Bowl again if Fat Andy does his job the right way....something he hasn't done in 12 years so far. Stop talking nonsense about Mike Vick.

Kolb is a class act and will start somewhere.... you dont need a big arm to start, not in todays NFL. As for Vick he wont last... he reverted back to the old mike vick at the end of the year making bad decisions quite frequently. The birds need to draft a real QB and develop him...

My criticism of Kolb has nothing to do with Vick. I know Vick's limitations. To critcize Kolb doesn't have to include Vick in any way, shape or form. I'm talking about Kolb only, a career backup for life. Hell, Vince Young has more upside at 6'5" for long term. Check out the height for SB winning QBs the last 15 years. The overwhelming majority were 6'5" minimum, more than a 2/1 margin.

uhh, the niners and packers did not win SB's because of rogers and young SCRAMBLING ability. they arent running QB's. they were good scrambling who would pick up yards when needed occasionaly. they did thier damage THROWING THE FOOTBALL...they dont win a SB without aaron rogers throwing accurate passes. they dont rely on aaron rogers or young to run for 100+ yards to win because thats what you do with Vick. I would take Kolb over Vick EVERY DAY. Vick is like desean jackson, great at one thing...too small and fragile to stay healthy for 16 games...not gonna win a SB. Roethlisberger is HUGE and throws accurate passes under pressure, and rogers throws accurate passes all the time. Vick tries running around and gets tackled against good defenses. IT WILL NOT WIN A SB.

kk aint winning no SB with anyone. As far as running QB's..hmm I think Steve Young won a SB,,hmm I think rodgers is borderline run QB and he just won SB..once KK is gone, Vince Young will be here to back up Vick..mark it down...wolf.

I don't care about Vick. Kolb is not the real deal and will be exposed once his act gets a chance to play out. Kolb kool aid? No thanks. He can schmooze up to A. Rodgers all he wants, but that pedigree ain't there. He'll get his chance somewhere and I'll be watching just like I watched that stiff McNabb last year.

escaped your way off man...the eagles O-line with the FASTEST QB in the entire league still have up the 2nd MOST sacks in the ENTIRE league. And Kolb is not a scrambler. If he played on a normal team, with a decent offensive line and a run game he would be a aployff QB guaranteed. hes better then casell, probably better then eli (who won a SB)...dont let Andys terrible 0-line make you think Kolb is bad. Any other QB would have gotten MURDERED just as bad. It was an accident waiting to happen having slow developing plays and predictable passes over and over against clay mathews and the packers D. Kolb is good enough to win a SB. hes good. I would rather him and a run game then Vick running around for his life because that WILL NEVER WIN A SB. EVER.

That means I think he's one of those soft athletes. The ones who for some reason can't gut out real pain. He's also very slow to react to defenses encroaching the pocket and will be in a wheel chair before a full season of starting.

I don't care about Vick. I'm saying Kolb will never put in a full season starting at QB. He's stretcher bait. You heard it here first. Just keep the ambulance idling during the game because he's gonna need a hospital before he ever gets a full season under his belt.

T Bear u're on point man haters convention here on this site. As much as I believe in Kev good kid and will be a very good QB in this league. We need to trade him this year while his value is at it's peak. The lack of a CBA could truly hurt us this year and our ability to attract the top free agents.

did anyone ever tell kk that flattery will get you no where.that includes arizona! if kk wants to start then what he needs to do is get himself a piece of paper with color coded plays on it,have it laminated and hold it over his mouth and walk back and forth on the sideline with a headset on that says motorola. he also needs to make sure whenever there's a timeout and vick comes to the sideline to talk to reid or marty, that he needs to stand in the immediate vacinity and remove his headset and look like he's somehow involved in whats going on even though he isn't! this will make him look smarter and more attractive to other teams.

Kolb's an acceptable backup. But as a starter he would be a cripple before Game 10. He takes a medium sized hit and gets up like he's in a world of pain. Reminds me of Phil Simms' kid. Poor little guy was munched.

Geeze!...lotta haters and numbskulls writing here today. My two cents worth: KK is a class act. I'd love to see him with our Iggles next year. BUT, considering that IF V-7 has a real good year, KK could just walk away into the waiting arms of some team willing to throw money at HIM, and not draft picks at ANDY. 'Tis a puzzlement!.....If he's kept, he walks at the end of his contract. And I don't think the team will be ready for a legitimate shot at winning the Supe, unless the O-Line is FIXED!! If I had to guess, I would say that we lose the pre-season to the CBA thing, but a miracle will save AT LEAST 14 regular season games, if not all 16. And our team's readiness will be aimed towards 2012, rather than 2011. That means one of the two QB's will HAVE to go for a top draft pick. Should be VERRRRRY interesting for a while.

If Fitzgerald was watching the Eagles games with Kolb QBing you would think he would have noticed that Kolb is unable to get the ball to the WRs. McCoy has Kolb to thank for most of his catches this year. Kolb is the king of the checkdown.

lol, manus? manus?!? Is that the best your 5th grade education could come up with? Is that supposed to be some sort of insult or does that mean something from the planet you're on? Oh, the sorry state of our elementary schools these days. Your juvenile name calling is stale and unimaginative. I've forgotten more than you'll ever know about "TG". You indicate the number of games and sack totals. Did your feeble little mind realize that the number of games mentioned totaled 20? (You might have to take your shoes off to verify that) Compare it by # of drop backs and they're not too far off from each other. I notice you failed to mention the number of TD & INT's in those games also. Wonder why...

@yellowolf - I guess you didn't take your shoes off. What your tiny brain fails to realize is per game is meaningles because your man-crush didn't play 8 FULL games. Here's some (real) stats from NFL.com:

    KK: 6 fumbles/3 lost; 7 TDs 7 INTs; 0 rushing TDs; 76.1 rating

    MV: 11 fumbles/3 lost; 21 TDs 6 INTs; 9 rushing TDs; 100.2 rating

You put out meaningless (and at times false) stats and purposefully leave out what's relevant just to further your agenda. You're really chicken$hit, especially when you're pushing the abuse button. Since you think you're clever with nicknames, I'll start referring to you as yellowolf, cause that's what you are

Do you really want me to start going over your fabulous guess work? wiff, with your record you all but assure Vick does win the SB. Annnnd you still haven't said why you think KK can. KK = Scott Mitchell reprise. Niners have some talent and in that division, even the addition of a mediocre talent like Kolb may swing things. There isn't a good QB in the entire division so one of those teams may flinch and over pay for Kolb. SF has some surplus OL talent which is what the Es need. Ship KK to SF for Staley, draft Pouncey and with a steady JJax returning you'll see more points than you can count. And please axe Dunlap and Max. They are worthless.

It's a league hungry for good quarterbacks. That's why Kolb gets attention around the league, independent of what the media writes about. There are maybe only 10 good QBs. Kolb has looked good at times, and pretty pathetic other times. Teams are hoping that with time he'll play well most of the time. He definitely is not Aaron Rodgers, who has a better arm, better feet in the pocket, more speed, and a better sense of the game. Kolb might be good enough to take a great team to the Super Bowl.
