Mike Kafka has been cleared to take snaps and could be a step closer to returning. No decision has been made on his availability for Thursday night's preseason finale against the New York Jets, Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinwehg said Monday.
Kafka fractured a bone his left, non-throwing, hand on Aug. 9 against the Steelers. He has not played since. In his absence, Nick Foles and Trent Edwards have played well, especially the former. Kafka, in the opinion of some, could be the odd man out when the Eagles trim their roster to 53 on Friday.
Andy Reid said recently that he will likely keep three quarterbacks.
"I think you can go two ways," Kafka said when he asked about having to watch from the sidelines. "The way I approach it was learning as much as I could. You can definitely get better by watching. I worked on that."
So does he feel any less secure than he did heading into camp when he was the certified No. 2 quarterback behind Michael Vick?
"I think right now I'm just worried about practicing today," Kafka said. "I can only control my opportunities I get today in practice."
-- Nate Allen said that the hamstring strain he suffered Sunday during Flight Night practice was minor. The Eagles originally said he "tweaked" it. Allen missed some time in camp and also missed the first preseason game because of a hamstring strain. He said he wasn't sure if he would practice this afternoon.
-- Mornhinweg recently said that the team had discussed the idea of using Chris Polk as a lead blocker, but he said today that the running back hasn't yet been used in that manner in practice. Mornhinweg said that he thought Polk was still capable of doing that job if the Eagles decided to keep the rookie on the roster rather than a traditional fullback.
-- The Eagles have to trim four from their roster by 4 p.m. today to get to 75. The lockers of guard Mike Gibson and wide receiver Jamel Hamler were ominously empty today. Rather than cut more players the Eagles may temporarily save a few roster spots by placing tackle Jason Peters (Achilles), defensive tackle Mike Patterson (brain surgery) or safety Colt Anderson (ACL)on the PUP list.
Now that he is cleared to play, they can cut him and not have to pay him.....fianlly, he was wasting a roster spot... nuggett
If Foles is annointed the backup to Vick, they have to keep Kafka. If it's Edwards, then Kafka is gone. Reason being is if Vick plays poorly this season, they can let him walk with minimal impact. So if Foles is the new starter, Kafka slides right in as his long term backup. Trent Edwards does nothing for me. beegal99
i'd rather give trent the boot and keep kafka. he doesn't have much of an arm, but at least he's smart and can manage the game properly. Zero
Cut him. Just get it over with. No way can they keep Mike (choke) Kafka over Foles or Edwards, it's just plain stupid. He had his opportunities and now it's time to move on. WakeUpCall
From my seat......Vick, Edwards, Foles.....trade Kafka for a pick somewhere. Edwards is SMART, while Foles has looked great, this is a real important year for the Eagles...Kafka, even when healthy, has not shown much. Foles, while showing that he belongs, has not played the likes of the Giants, Cowboys, Bears, etc. in terms of starters on defense. Edwards has been a starter in the league, and is the right guy to back up "Light Bulb Mike" j.k.- Mike Kafka has proven that he will never be a starter in the NFL. And is not a good option if you have to start him as a #2. Additionally, he has proven that he is not very good coming in off the bench when Vick is hurt. Take away one drive during game 2 in Atlanta, he has been unproductive. Trent Edwards isn't perfect, by any means. But, at least, he has been a starter for many games, and has the experience. I would much rather have Edwards come in during the middle of the game when Vick or Coles is hurt rather than Kafka. I don't even understand why there is a debate. arrowamy
Something tells me Andy will be there for his players as they say and keep Kafka, they will get rid of Edwards which is wrong but thats what happens with a Players Coach who doesn't want to offend anybody. He would get rid of Foles but knows he would start a riot. neddyflanders
Let's see, the choices to back-up Vick are: Foles, Edwards and Kafka. Nothing Kafka has done in his (what, 3-years) time here would indicate he should survive the cutdown. At least until Foles gets more experience, Edwards should be #2 and Foles #3. However, both are interchangeable parts. Foles has the stronger arm and smarts but he needs game experience against NFL 1st team players. In 2013, Foles can probably step in and they can cut Vick loose and not owe him a dime. 1republican- That' the way I see it too. I think your version is closer to what will happen than most. Of course, with Reid, anything's possible. essell
Kafka's lack of arm strength is an issue. If you can't stretch the field, you're no good to us. SC Philly Fan
See if you package Tapp and Kafka for a pick next year. watsonmr
Kafka has played in actual NFL games, for the Eagles. Edwards has looked good in preseason games against 3d stringers. There's no way they cut Kafka, regardless of his physical limitations. If they're reduced to playing either one of them, the season's toast anyway. JBirks
im sorry, but Kafka has to go! he brings absolutely nothing to the table, and his noodle arm renders players that we signed to 50million dollar contracts like Desean, utterly useless! Kafka Brings NOTHING to the table. You can grab any ol ivy league brainiac to learn the offense insdie out, and it would equal kafka's contribution to this team!

Simple solution. It's Vick, Edwards, Foles with Kafka on IR. If Vick fails they have Foles, Edwards and Kafka for next year. A trade for Kafka isn't going to happen and cutting him now is a bad idea. Unstable1
trade kafka to the Lions, they will need a QB in week 2 when Stafford the wimp gets annihilated by their inoffensive line... BirdinParadise
