Jim Herrmann withdraws name from Eagles' DC search

MOBILE, Ala. -- Giants linebackers coach Jim Herrmann pulled his name from consideration for the Eagles defensive coordinator job, according to reports out of New York on Monday morning.

Herrmann interviewed with the Eagles on Saturday. While the team has been linked to several other candidates, Herrmann's interview is the only one that has been reported.

The 52-year-old Herrmann has been with the Giants for the last four seasons. Before that he was the linebackers coach with the New York Jets for three years. He spent the 20 previous years at Michigan, the last nine as defensive coordinator.

The Eagles have been linked to Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and Florida defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, but Grantham has yet to interview and Quinn took the Seahawks job.

New Eagles coach Chip Kelly said on WIP (610-AM) last week that he was looking for a coordinator with vast NFL experience to lead his defense. Grantham coached in the NFL for 11 seasons -- three as defensive coordinator with the Browns from 2005-07 -- and Quinn was an NFL assistant for years before taking the Florida job two years ago.

The Eagles did reach out to former Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton, but he signed with the Browns on Friday.

The Eagles have not commented on any staffing hires, nor do they plan to until Kelly finalizes his staff. There have already been a few hires that have leaked.

Former Browns head coach Pat Shurmur has been hired, likely to be Kelly's offensive coordinator, an NFL source said. Kelly is also bringing Oregon defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro to the Eagles, according to reports. Boston College linebackers coach Bill McGovern, Kentucky defensive coordinator Rick Minter and Bills wide receiver coach Bob Bicknell are also joining the staff, per Football Scoop.

Kelly has kept at least two Eagles assistants. Duce Staley will be his running backs coach and Ted Williams will switch from coaching running backs to tight ends.

Most of the Eagles coaches and scouts are here for Senior Bowl practices. Kelly and general manager Howie Roseman are expected to talk later today.
