Cullen Jenkins has agreed to a restructured deal with the Eagles. (Yong Kim/Staff File Photo)

I never thought the Eagles were going to let Cullen Jenkins go, and sure enough, the team announced today a restructuring of Jenkins' contract that will keep Jenkins here through 2012, at least.

Even though Jenkins is 31 and might not be a long-term starter, his return, along with the return from injury of Antonio Dixon, might mean the Eagles don't target a defensive tackle with the 15th overall selection in the April entry draft. If they re-sign pending free agent Derek Landri, that will become even less likely.

Last week, NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock identified d-tackle as the deepest position at the top of this draft. There's a good chance a solid one will still be there if the Birds choose to use one of their two second-round picks at that spot. The Eagles have other pressing needs, such as linebacker, and wideout, if they don't franchise and keep DeSean Jackson.

Attempts to contact Jenkins' agent, Cary Fabrikant, about the restructuring have so far been unsuccessful. Jenkins' deal was announced as five years last summer, but given the $7.5 million cap number included for this season, it seems it was intended for either release or restructuring after 2011 all along. The team's release confirming the restructuring gave no details.

There had been speculation in Green Bay that the Packers might have been interested in bringing Jenkins back to the place where he played his first seven NFL seasons, if the Eagles didn't retain him.

Les, Adam Caplan also reported that the Eagles want to re-sign Trevor Laws to a new deal. He's a good rotational DT.

unless you've lived in a hole for 12 years, regardless of who the eagles sign or don't sign has no bearing on an Eagles draft.

Like the 2008 basketball Redeem Team, Philly's Redeem Team in 2012 (redeem some respect) will win it all.

Does this make it more likely that the Birds plan to let Jackson walk and trade up in the draft for Blackmon?

Drop Desean please!!!! if you give him the $$ then he will "mope" about not getting the ball enough or they are using over the middle too much! just drop him!!! save the 10 mill and draft his replacement!! i personally would rather have a 6'4 WR than a 5'10,, call me crazy!! draft two LB's in the 2nd round! save the 1st pick for a WR! then find and an soaking wet empty box, give it a headset and call it the D coordinator! just sayin!
With all this talent who needs a real defensive coordinator 2011

Ok, let me see if I can follow any logic if there is any. DT is deep in the draft, so does that mean WR's, LB's, S's whom would normally go higher in any other draft fall to the Eagles? This team strikes out more in the first round than Ryan Howard. I guess locking up DT's for the next two years indicates they will draft for future prospects and not immediate help.

    Jenkins, Patterson, Landri and Dixon.

    A very strong DT rotation.

As ever, the only thing that can spoil it is ... injuries.

IF the Eagles sign a FA LB (Tulloch, et al) and they may target a WR in the draft (Kendall Wright!!) and say goodbye to Jackson.

Otherwise it will be hard to pass on Kuechly ... if he is available.

No - do not draft Kuechly - we already have Matthews and we need a bona fide MLB starter from free agency - besides, Kuechly is undersized for the middle - there are other MLB's with more size available

A defensive tackle will not be a surprise if they feel he's clearly the best guy available in their slot. Jenkins is not young. Patterson isn't a spring chicken anymore. The Eagles have no problem spending money on linemen. There are linebacker and safety prospects, but they'll have to really be sold on Barron or Kuechly to draft those guys. And Wagner at LB could be the guy they're eying, in the 2nd round. So if they don't take Barron, I'm expecting a DT in the first.

Taking the best player available is not usually the way the Eagles go, sad to say. Remember, they needed a D-lineman, then traded up for Graham, when they could have had JPP. Graham = Ken O'Brien; JPP = Dan Marino. Yes, Eagles fans, we are now the Jets.

and so far Graham has done nothing to distinguish himself as an impact player from the first round. I say the fill another position with that first round pick.
