Jeffrey Lurie's statement on Garrett Reid
Zach Berman
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie released the following statement after authorities announced Garrett Reid was found to have steroids when he died on Aug. 5:
“The news today on Garrett Reid’s possession of steroids is disappointing. It’s clear the conduct in which he apparently engaged runs counter to the values and principles mandated for everyone associated with our organization. We have spoken with the league office and have pledged our full cooperation with their requests should there be any. While we remained saddened by the tragic end of a young man’s life and know how hard this must be for the entire Reid family, we are extremely confident that Garrett’s actions were unknown to those around him and did not involve our football team.
“The NFL has a rigorous drug testing program for its players. It is a matter of record that none of our players has tested positive for any of the steroids mentioned in the district attorney’s report.”
What a mess you're presiding over Jeffy. Gold standard, eh? Time to clean house and throw the baby (Roseman) out with the bathwater. hunglikeaton
It speaks! While remaining completely silent on his totally f-up coach and the destruction of a once great football franchise, Lurie decides it is important to address this topic. Larry Byrd- Who do you think made it a great franchise? Andy did.

No wonder the team tanked after going 3-1, their roid dealer died. And no wonder Babin was so salty, he was all roided up!! CoettaGarner25- Amen! Lurie, "no eagle tested positive for steroids" But were any tested on August 5th? Remember the INQ reported GR was the "bed-checker" at LeHIGH
- No, that's not the man speaking. Rather, it's his team of lawyers who prepped this speech and cleansed it of any personal incriminating wordage. No, it would not play well for the image of the Gold Standard, Pedal To The Metal, Multiple SuperBowl winning team to be anywhere near associated with an issue like this. There is no heart in this press releaae. It's cold. It's distancing. And if I were the latest Public Relations Rep who passed this on, I'd be sharpening up my resume'.
In light of the horrors of Friday and this incident, there can be no greater human suffering then having to lose a child, no matter the circumstances.
Really, now he speaks. Nothing about your team circling the drain of the toilet bowl? lostInPhilly
I remember what I said to my wife when I first heard that Tiger Woods backed into that tree: "There's a lot more to this than him just backing into a tree." Well, I have the same feeling now. Garrett worked with the Eagles strength and conditioning coach. Steroids give players instant strength, albeit illegally. Coincidence? Maybe. Hopefully. But it sure smells fishy. iceman
This seals Reid's fate if it wasn't already sealed. hunglikeaton
I've been an EAGLES fan and season ticket holder for a long time. Mr. Lurie has been the best owner of the franchise in my lifetime. Too young for Bert Bell. I loved Dick Vermeil and Buddy Ryan but as coaches go Andy Reid has won a ton games. It was gut wrenching to lose the NFC Championship at home 2 years in a row yes. The last game a the VET really stuck becasue the Eagles beat Tampa Bay 8 or 9 out 10 games. Heck my 21 year old son doesn't really know how bad the Eagles were before. At one point in in 2001 when I turned 40 the Eagles had 2 division titles and maybe 5 or 6 wining seasons in my entire lifetime! Andy and Jeffery have give me and my family a lot of great seasons and a ton of family fun going to games and watching games. I can't image what to the Reid family has been through with the lost of a child. So I'm glade I'm not Mr. Lurie but if it were my call Andy would be back! Happy Day! RLHorst- 1. this a closed investigation the file is subject to disclosure under PA Open Records Law.
2. it takes 5 hours to analyze steroids not 5 months. why did law enforcement drag their feet? why didnt law enforcement investigate who supplied GR with steroids and lie about trying to find who killed GR when they know GR killed GR?
3. they knew GR was dealing drugs/steroids and paraphernalia on Aug 5, NFL Security should have immediately tested all the players. why didnt they?
4. eagles knew GR was a convicted drug/steroid dealer/addict and eagles let him be a asst conditioning coach? Roger (zero tolerance) Goddell should suspend Andy, Jeff and Joe indefinitely and fine them a million each. why didnt NFL even investigate? what does this say about mgt's judgment and blatant disregard for NFL rules.
5. did NFL Security approve GR (paid or unpaid) working for the Eagles? Did they have any restrictions for (dealer/addict) GR? Was he subject to random testing? NFL knew GR had full access to Eagles at the time of the prior convictions. Did Eagles tell NFL GR was living in dorm and doing the bed checks?
6. why is the philly sports media hands off on this major story? the local sports talk screeners are not allowing calls about GR on the air. why? this appears to be a large scale steroid on the level of some of the MLB and NBA drug scandals but the NFL and Law Enforcement and Media are going to bury it.
Sounds like Lurie is in full CYA mode here.
Couldn't help but notice that the philly.com reporter who wrote the headline article today is named Jayson Nark. dasher
@alwaysright: I just read your post. Excellent questions, brother! They've been floating around in my mind for weeks, and you laid them out so logically and articulately. This situation stinks to high heaven! dasher
Lurie says: "We have spoken with the league office and have pledged our full cooperation with their requests should there be any." There had darn well better be some requests for answers from the NFL, such as why Garrett Reid was employed by the Eagles and whether he really needed 19 vials of steroids just for his li'l ole self. Andy says: "I am confident that my son’s decisions did not affect our football team in any way." Just how confident, Andy? As confident as you were that the Castillo-Washburn team would produce a strong defense? Dave Clemens
Dasher- LOL on Jason Nark. I was googling Jason Stark and was pulled here...Oh well, George Brett/Kenny Brett, Jason Giambi/Jeremy Giambi, Greg Maddux/Mike Maddux...Jason Nark/Jason Stark LOL! outta work
Hmmm...I wonder how many of the "fans" who want to take aim at Lurie and Reid for the tragedy of this past summer have left the Linc blitzed, and headed home in their car. Or how many of them have tried drugs....or known someone who is addicted. After seeing what we have seen this past weekend, and we listen to the hate that these "fans" spew toward people who have never done anything to hurt them, except not win a football game. I wonder which one of these fans sleeps with is Bushmaster. Sweet dreams. Bob K
That is pure bull ... A drug dealer is a drug dealer and will sell wherever opportunity exists. What better environment than a football team to sell steroids, especially when one can move under the cover and protection of his Dad being the coach. I'm guessing both sons moved freely through that lockeroom for several years. This was a convicted felon roaming through the Eagles lockerroom and also helping in strength and conditioning. Why did the NFL even allow his entry into the Eagles organization? Multiple Executive level people turned their heads the other way to ignore this threat to the Eagles organization, including Lurie! miket47
STEROIDS AND FOOTBALL BREAD BUTTER---LIKE THIS IS A SURPRISE==COME ON MAN! LIKE THEY JUST HAPPENED TO BE NEXT TO A FOOTBALL PROGRAM...ARE WE ALL TO BE DOLTS AND JUST BELIEVE HE WAS SELLING THIS STUFF TO PEOPLE DOWN TOWN OR TO THE JANITORS--COME ON MAN--INVESTIGATE--
AMD ABSOLUTELY NO ONE KNEW----THAT’S REALLY Hard to swallow!

Reid has to go. Vick has to go. And then we either need a strongman coach of the Jeff Fisher variety and that would be someone like Gruden Or else we can bring in a young aggressive coach and also an aggressive gm who will be in sync with the head coach. But the bottom line is that Lurie needs to move on this immediately because once the season ends it is too late -- too many coaches are going to be fired and the market for quality head coaches is going to be immediate. All of that said, I would not hire any type of finess let's throw some fastballs at them head coach. Lurie should be real concerned about philosophy and the new guy's philosophy has to be to put together a big, strong and violent defense that actually intimidates and to bring in big strong o-lineman who can beat up the other team on the line of scrimmage. We have plenty of talent and many nice high draft picks to come -- now we need to find the right coach and get back to intimidating not finessing. uts- I have been a proponent of letting Reid finish the season out of respect and had agreed Lurie should wait until the end of the season before adressing this disaster of a season.
However with this news I would fire Reid immediately. To have the coaches son dealing drugs and steriods in the teams facility is unbelievable. That Reid had know idea means he is either implicated or blind. He needs to take full responsibility for allowing this to happen. As such he must either step down and resign or Lurie should fire him.
I cannot believe that this went on in the Eagles camp.
Perhaps Rick Burkholder should address the reporters on the question of steroids and answer their questions. Eagle_1960
is andy reid the joe paterno of the eagles - the all powerful ruler that everyone cowers too? Hopeing this is the straw that break jeff's back and does fire reid at the end of the season - we need to cleanse the reid stink off the eagles rossta
