Jeffrey Lurie's statement on Garrett Reid

POSTED: Monday, December 17, 2012, 3:29 PM

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie released the following statement after authorities announced Garrett Reid was found to have steroids when he died on Aug. 5:

“The news today on Garrett Reid’s possession of steroids is disappointing. It’s clear the conduct in which he apparently engaged runs counter to the values and principles mandated for everyone associated with our organization. We have spoken with the league office and have pledged our full cooperation with their requests should there be any. While we remained saddened by the tragic end of a young man’s life and know how hard this must be for the entire Reid family, we are extremely confident that Garrett’s actions were unknown to those around him and did not involve our football team.

“The NFL has a rigorous drug testing program for its players. It is a matter of record that none of our players has tested positive for any of the steroids mentioned in the district attorney’s report.”

What a mess you're presiding over Jeffy. Gold standard, eh? Time to clean house and throw the baby (Roseman) out with the bathwater.

It speaks! While remaining completely silent on his totally f-up coach and the destruction of a once great football franchise, Lurie decides it is important to address this topic.

Who do you think made it a great franchise? Andy did.

No wonder the team tanked after going 3-1, their roid dealer died. And no wonder Babin was so salty, he was all roided up!!

Amen! Lurie, "no eagle tested positive for steroids" But were any tested on August 5th? Remember the INQ reported GR was the "bed-checker" at LeHIGH

No, that's not the man speaking. Rather, it's his team of lawyers who prepped this speech and cleansed it of any personal incriminating wordage. No, it would not play well for the image of the Gold Standard, Pedal To The Metal, Multiple SuperBowl winning team to be anywhere near associated with an issue like this. There is no heart in this press releaae. It's cold. It's distancing. And if I were the latest Public Relations Rep who passed this on, I'd be sharpening up my resume'.

In light of the horrors of Friday and this incident, there can be no greater human suffering then having to lose a child, no matter the circumstances.

Really, now he speaks. Nothing about your team circling the drain of the toilet bowl?

I remember what I said to my wife when I first heard that Tiger Woods backed into that tree: "There's a lot more to this than him just backing into a tree." Well, I have the same feeling now. Garrett worked with the Eagles strength and conditioning coach. Steroids give players instant strength, albeit illegally. Coincidence? Maybe. Hopefully. But it sure smells fishy.

This seals Reid's fate if it wasn't already sealed.

I've been an EAGLES fan and season ticket holder for a long time. Mr. Lurie has been the best owner of the franchise in my lifetime. Too young for Bert Bell. I loved Dick Vermeil and Buddy Ryan but as coaches go Andy Reid has won a ton games. It was gut wrenching to lose the NFC Championship at home 2 years in a row yes. The last game a the VET really stuck becasue the Eagles beat Tampa Bay 8 or 9 out 10 games. Heck my 21 year old son doesn't really know how bad the Eagles were before. At one point in in 2001 when I turned 40 the Eagles had 2 division titles and maybe 5 or 6 wining seasons in my entire lifetime! Andy and Jeffery have give me and my family a lot of great seasons and a ton of family fun going to games and watching games. I can't image what to the Reid family has been through with the lost of a child. So I'm glade I'm not Mr. Lurie but if it were my call Andy would be back! Happy Day!

    1. this a closed investigation the file is subject to disclosure under PA Open Records Law.
    2. it takes 5 hours to analyze steroids not 5 months. why did law enforcement drag their feet? why didnt law enforcement investigate who supplied GR with steroids and lie about trying to find who killed GR when they know GR killed GR?
    3. they knew GR was dealing drugs/steroids and paraphernalia on Aug 5, NFL Security should have immediately tested all the players. why didnt they?
    4. eagles knew GR was a convicted drug/steroid dealer/addict and eagles let him be a asst conditioning coach? Roger (zero tolerance) Goddell should suspend Andy, Jeff and Joe indefinitely and fine them a million each. why didnt NFL even investigate? what does this say about mgt's judgment and blatant disregard for NFL rules.
    5. did NFL Security approve GR (paid or unpaid) working for the Eagles? Did they have any restrictions for (dealer/addict) GR? Was he subject to random testing? NFL knew GR had full access to Eagles at the time of the prior convictions. Did Eagles tell NFL GR was living in dorm and doing the bed checks?
    6. why is the philly sports media hands off on this major story? the local sports talk screeners are not allowing calls about GR on the air. why? this appears to be a large scale steroid on the level of some of the MLB and NBA drug scandals but the NFL and Law Enforcement and Media are going to bury it.

Sounds like Lurie is in full CYA mode here.

Couldn't help but notice that the philly.com reporter who wrote the headline article today is named Jayson Nark.

@alwaysright: I just read your post. Excellent questions, brother! They've been floating around in my mind for weeks, and you laid them out so logically and articulately. This situation stinks to high heaven!

Lurie says: "We have spoken with the league office and have pledged our full cooperation with their requests should there be any." There had darn well better be some requests for answers from the NFL, such as why Garrett Reid was employed by the Eagles and whether he really needed 19 vials of steroids just for his li'l ole self. Andy says: "I am confident that my son’s decisions did not affect our football team in any way." Just how confident, Andy? As confident as you were that the Castillo-Washburn team would produce a strong defense?
