Ingram has Baker's cyst
Jeff McLane
Cornelius Ingram underwent an MRI at Jefferson Hospital Wednesday night and it revealed that the Eagles' tight end had a "significant" Baker's cyst in the back of his knee and calf, the team said.
Ingram had the cyst drained Thursday and will not travel to play the Chiefs Friday. A Baker's cyst, according to MayoClinic.com, "is a fluid-filled cyst that causes a bulge and a feeling of tightness behind your knee, and "is usually the result of a problem with your knee joint, such as arthritis or a cartilage tear."
Ingram is trying to come back from two straight torn anterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee. The cyst, on the same leg, had ballooned up recently and slowed the second-year tight end considerably.
Ingram's chances of making the team now appear to be in danger. He's likely to land back on injured reserve for the second straight year if the Eagles just don't decide to make and injury settlement with their former fifth-round draft pick. With Ingram slowed by the knee, rookie Clay Harbor has solidified his standing as the backup tight end to Brent Celek.
“I would say that I wish Cornelius could be out there and doing his thing, and his leg wasn’t bothering him," Eagles coach Andy Reid said Wednesday. "I would tell you on the other hand that it’s given Harbor an opportunity to be out there and get a lot of reps and that that second tight end plays approximately twenty five percent of the plays max in our offense. What he’s doing with the increase play time, is he’s getting better. Every day he takes another step forward. He’s made some nice plays in practice. Now, we’ve got to get him the ball in the game and see how he does there.”
Ingram had tried to play through the injury, but there was only so much he could do in practice or in two preseason games. He hasn't played in an actual game in nearly three years.
“It’s kind of frustrating,” Ingram said Tuesday, “because I know I have a lot in me. But until that time comes I won’t be able to show it.”
- Baker's cyst doesn't sound appetizing.
I really feel for Ingram. Hope he can make it all the way back. tacklinjoe
Is that like a baker's dozen, as in Ingram's lucky number - 13. pflipper
This kid sounds like the new Correll Buckhalter. Philly Ray- this sux for him. good thing he has his education to fall back on. daveH
I dont see how putting this guy on IR again is a bad thing. why cut him? they've seen he can open eyes when he is when healthy, why not give him another year and a chance to get healthy? this isnt a shawn andrews situation, let the guy take a year to really be 100%. ChampAnderson
I agree with Champ. We don't get the 4th round pick back if we cut him, and we don't get the salary back that we have already paid him if we cut him. Stash him on IR for another year and see if he returns to the guy who was the star of TC last year. If not, then cut him after TC next year. The Reddgie
Comment removed.- The cyst is bad news. I had one rupture several years ago; my leg from the knee down swelled so much so fast it looked like I had elephentiasis. I spent a week in the hospital, then had to get the knee drained twice a week for about three months. You can recover, but I'd not expect Ingram to be playing much this season.
What a shame. This guy has the talent to be an elite tight end. ItsOnLikeDK
You cut him because if he's on the IR you still have to pay him his full salary. I believe what the article is saying is that the Eagles may try to reach an injury agreement with him so that he would get a small salary and stay on IR for the year instead of them just cutting him and him not getting anything. Vote for Dickie
Another example of why we need ObamaCare. Soon enough, when football has left him behind, he is going to need good health care to make sure he can walk in his later years. If the Republicans have their way, people like Ingram will be crippled in their 30's and told they are not entitled to get health care, especially if they are African-American like he is. eldiablodelsol2009
cut this chump NRA AL
Put on the PUP list/IR and hope he's back next year. No point in cutting him, nothing to gain from it. Bleue
Put him on IR, what does he make, 300K tops? BallsDeep
Put him on IR, what does he make, 300K tops? BallsDeep
His salary is peanuts, only $320k ($365 against cap)...IR him. He's only 1 year removed from his second ACL surgery. If he's young and determined, he still has plenty of playing days ahead of him. Guys like Garrison Hearst and McGahee came back from worse injuries. Axeman54
I feel bad for the kid and wish him well but I can see where this is going........ Andy Reid will rely heavily on him and when he can't come back, they'll be caught flat footed. davekrieg
@ vote for dickie yeah, because the eagles spent so much money in the offseason, they dont have enough cash to pay this guy for getting healthy. whether or not they have to pay the full salary shouldnt be the issue. whether or not he can be a starting TE in the NFL one day should. enough already cheap-gles. ChampAnderson
Ingram is about $365K salary this year including his prorated bonus. You don't get useful NFL players much cheaper than that. Considering we don't have amazing TE depth I see no reason to cut him instead of just eating the cost of putting him on IR. sg021
They could have gotten Dave Thomas from New England for a 6th round pick like New Orleans did last year, and he helped them win a Super Bowl. Instead we draft damaged good in the 5th round, who can't help. Nothing against Ingram, but they could have been a little smarter. The year before that they drafted Jack Ikegwuonu in the 4th round, another player that was damaged goods who had a severe knee injury and never played. Combine those 2 with the signing of Marlin Jackson and Stacy Andrews, both injured players, that's very poor decision making and a lot of wasted money. If I was Jeff Laurie, I'd be taking a closer look at these decisions. watsonmr- It's not his fault that he got injured. It's not his fault that he was drafted in the 5th round. It's not his fault he got a cyst. NO need to call him names. Especially if you don't know him personally, and I'm guessing most don't. MVKrum
He's got skills - gie him another year to get healthy. ACL's are always better two years later anyway. robinlupe
This guy is a stud. Eagles should find a way to get him in the game, even if they have to wait until midseason. Don Cornelius
The important thing is the core of the knee is healthy. The cyst is just a by product of the original injury, and is a much quicker heal. Keep him on the roster or IR cause when he does get back, he'll be a very good player. Why cut him now when he costs nothing, have him get healthy and then sign with an NFC east team and terrorize us? BoredAtWork
They should IR Ingram and hopefully he will come back fully prepared to show his talent on the field. I see no reason , at all, to just cut him and I don't think the eagles should do that. If he has the talent they all think, he will be on IR , unfortunately for one more year. Get well Ingram! mikedi08
damaged goods! Are Eagles going to throw away money on wishful thinking of what he could be like they did with Shawn Andrews? jwatson
Get rid of this guy. I've never even seen him play, yet he's constantly talked about by the DN. He can't stay healthy - later dude. Like somebody said, at least he has his Florida education to fall back on. Tacklebury
eldiablodelsol2009 didn't just try to make a case for Obamacare, did he? How about he makes a case for personal responsibility for everyone and then get the heck out of a sports comment venue? Nice move, throwing the race card into the mix. You'll have a lot of time to contemplate how the lack of total socialism "mistreats" certain people after the upcoming congressional election sends a strong message to Washington. What a lame comment. Original #11
Yo NRA guy, why not just shoot him, right? I mean, he's totally dogging it by having 2 tough knee operations and not getting a chance to play. A cyst. What a lame excuse, right? I'm sure he wanted to miss a chance at playing for the National championship in college too at Florida cause he was lazy, not really hurt. Yea, Man, cut the Chump. Be smart about it! Ballgame
they took a risk when they drafted him. apparently, it didn't work out. allen_jones
The Eagle management showed good judgement drafting a TE this year and he appears to be a good one. Why not try the running back from LSU at TE instead of FB. They don't need another fullback after Weaver and Scott has size and speed and a reputation of being able to catch the ball. JACK V
What's todays news on BOZO the CLOWN and CAKE in the FACE--BANG BANG Vick ??? jwatson
It ain't about the money or the draft pick. It's whether the Eagles think he can play when healthy, and more importantly if they think he can even get healthy. Considering the Eagles track record of injured players that they held on to (with good and not so good outcomes), Correll Buckhalter, Derrick Burgess, Jerome McDougle, Victor Abiamiri, Shawn Andrews, et al, if the Eagles were to cut him, it's because they don't think he will ever be able to play at a high level. Based on everything I saw of Ingram in training camp LAST YEAR (a freakish athlete), his work ethic and solid character he's not going anywhere folks. They will either IR him if it is likely that he won't fully recover from this in a month or more, or carry him on the roster with the expectations that he will be ready to go in less than a month. Based on what I've seen of him in training camp and games THIS YEAR, and the numbers at WR and TE already, I expect the Eagles will IR him. Although he looks like a shell of himself this year compared to last, I have a hard time believing the Eagles would throw away this young man having already seen long glimpses of his talent in training camp last year. Such a shame, but as they say, life goes on. WatchOut4DirtyRollerSk8rs
Agree with watsonmr. I have no trouble with drafting Ingram, but the Eagles are taking way too many chances -- Marlin Jackson, Stacy Andrews, Ikegwuono, Ingram. Ingram seems like the best gamble, but Roseman seems to have a fantasy about putting together a championship team where everyone says, "Wow, Roseman is a genius. No one else would gamble on these guys and now look at the Eagles." Keep Ingram; cut Roseman. tacklinjoe- Are there still idiots in this country who think Obamacare helps anyone but those who will not work? Everyone else is paying more for less.
- way to go Original #11, you and Paul Sotx are so right. Cornelius will be eligible for the rest of his life to particiapte in insurance through the NFLPA, at the very least, and don't think for a minute that Cornelius has not already earned plenty to pay the premiums. I'd write more but i gotta get back to work so that i can pay my family's insurance premiums. Ain't no one giving hand outs to this ol' philly boy.
Yeah I agree we need obamacare so african americans can get healthcare... It's idiots like this 2009 that keep America strong. I really hope he isn't serious BBAX
