From Daily News staff writer David Gambacorta ...

In the early evening around Lincoln Financial Field, the crowds were starting to gather but the expected showdown between animal right advocates and supporters of Michael Vick had yet to fully materialize.

A small protest group of eight people was near the subway station at Broad and Pattison, headed up by Peter Bentivegna, of Media, and with Lucky, his family’s dog that was rescued from a shelter.

“Ninety percent of the people we’ve encountered are in support of Michael Vick,” said Bentivegna, who said the group was an informal collection who decided to come out as individuals, not part of formal organization.

As he spoke a motorist slowed down and yelled from the window, “Vick is great.”

Asked why he was there, Bentivegna said, “I hope people will get active in rescuing or adopting dogs.”

Another woman held up a sign that had the words, “Ethics over athletics.”

Closer to the stadium, three teenagers held up a white sign with picture of pit bull and the phrase, “Murderers are not role models.” They were surrounded by media and a group that identified itself as part of the National Exodus Council.

Ronald Armour, a member, said they were out in support of Vick because “PETA is using distortion.”

“What I want to ask PETA is where we were you when they were sicking dogs on people in the civil right movements.”

Philadelphia NAACP President J. Whyatt Mondesire arrived about an hour before game with about a dozen people.

"We’re here to show support for Michael Vick," Mondesire said.

He said the Eagles have told the NAACP that it will get the chance to meet with Vick in the near future. He said the group hoped to get Vick involved in some community minded activities.

He also spoke of a "one-sided dialogue" on talk radio that was tinged with racism.

One thing that is apparent among the fans is that many people have purchased Michael Vick jerseys.

The crimes Vick committed is about moral ethics, not about race. But despite the Whyatt Mondesire hypocrisy, I believe there is a voice for Civil Rights activists in this…The Eagles have opened a Pandora’s Box with this signing, now all parties involved with Vick have to follow through on their promises. The truth is there are worse crimes than dogfighting in Philly that deserve at least as much attention that this is getting. And there are people who are understandably frustrated that other crimes are not getting that kind of attention…I do believe however that addressing this dogfighting problem, which the Eagles have made their priority to the community, WILL lead to addressing even more serious issues in this city such as drugs, violence, etc…The only way this is going to work for everyone is if we all can put away our egos, agendas, hypocrisy and work together to come up with a solution instead of protesting against each other.

Let's not pretend that dogfighting is his only crime. He and his friends came up new and presumably more fun ways of killing the dogs when they didn't perform. Hanging, stomping, drowning and electrocuting? He enjoyed watching them suffer, plain and simple. There is one profession other than quarterback that exhibits this behavior - serial killer. Torturing animals is one of the warning signs. This guy is a sociopath.

Oh yeah, speaking of stomping, his brother is a class act, too. Dumervil was lying on his stomach, completely defenseless. He also liked to get 15 year-olds high and bring them to motels. This family sucks!

You all need to read this article before you make any judgments on Mike Vick. By far the best take on the situation I have seen... http://www.mindwafers.com/1/post/2009/08/michael-vick-haters-one-shocking-attempt-to-get-you-all-to-stop-barking.html

Keep the protests AWAY from the stadium. Book a conference room in a big hotel and have the protests there :)

I'm no PETA fan but I gotta ask, what the heck is the NAACP talkng about? Seriously, PETA is nowhere to be seen or heard on this. Other animal rights groups are staying away from this circus too. The NAACP i just looking for publicity and making up enemies to get themselves on TV.

Hey mmac, I read your article. There's is some truth there, but here's the thing. There is a place for people who perpetuate the abhorrent and ignorant behavior they witnessed as children. Whether they abuse women, children or animals (as long as it's smaller and weaker than you) they end up in jail. So I guess everything worked out the way it should have.

Newsflash to Ronald Armour: PETA was not there because it did not exist at that time! PETA was formed in 1980, braintrust! I just don't get how some people are trying to twist this around and turn it into something racist. Last time I checked, PETA goes anywhere there is animal cruelty. They harrassed the heck out of a WHITE gunshop owner, WHITE Mayor, and WHITE pigeon shooters in order to halt the Hegins Pigeon Shoots up in rural PA. Not a black person to be found and yet PETA was there. This is not a black and white thing, this is about extreme animal cruelty. PETA isn't even there to protest Vick so that just shows how ignorant some people are. Way to stay ignorant, Mr. Armour.
