The 2014 NFL Draft is 8 months away, but it’s never too early to begin imagining newcomers in midnight green. Here are some college football players to keep an eye on today who could be on the Eagles’ radar:
1) Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA: (16) UCLA at (23) Nebraska, 12pm
Hundley is a redshirt sophomore, who has great size, and can move. Playing in Nebraska will be Hundley's first good test of the season. If the Eagles have visions of pursuing a QB in the 2014 draft, the market might be flooded with them, with Teddy Bridgewater, Tajh Boyd, Marcus Mariota and Hundley all potential 1st round targets. The question now is... Will the Eagles' record be too good that they won't get a shot at one of them?
2) Adrian Hubbard, OLB, Alabama: (1) Alabama at (6) Texas A&M, 3:30pm
Hubbard is a 6'6, 252 pound OLB, and you know... big people beat up little people. The Eagles have gotten good play from their OLBs through one game thus far, but their need for players at this position remains obvious. And look at Hubbard's wingspan. How long are this dude's arms?!?
3) C.J. Mosley ILB, Alabama: (1) Alabama at (6) Texas A&M, 3:30pm
Mosley is a little undersized at 6'2, 232, but could be viewed as a replacement for DeMeco Ryans, who is going to count for $6.9 million against the cap in 2014. Mosley and Mychal Kendricks would give the Eagles a very athletic duo at ILB.
4) Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M: (1) Alabama at (6) Texas A&M, 3:30pm
Matthews is regarded by some as the top rated OT in the 2014 draft class. It's still to be determined whether or not Jason Peters is a star player or not, and the Eagles will need to replace him at some point. If the Eagles are drafting high enough where they'd have a shot to take Matthews, they would probably be better served to use that pick on another position, but it's still worth keeping an eye on Matthews nevertheless, and this will likely be the best defense he faces all season.
5) Jordan Matthews, WR, Vanderbilt: Vanderbilt at (13) South Carolina, 7pm
Jordan Matthews is off to a blazing start to his season:
Here were his numbers last season:
That is outstanding production. Matthews has good size at 6'3, 206, and while he's not exactly the most willing or best blocker (a WR requirement under Chip Kelly), watch his speed at the 1:45 mark below:
The Eagles will need to replace Jeremy Maclin if he leaves in free agency.
