The Big Kid is back.
The Giants announced today that they have signed former Eagles offensive lineman Shawn Andrews.
The Birds cut ties with Andrews back in March after he struggled to rehab from back injuries and battled depression. He has not played in an NFL game since 2008, when he was sidelined in the second game of the season.
Between 2005 and 2007, Andrews started 47 of 48 games, earning a pair of Pro Bowl berths and All-Pro honors in 2006. The Eagles drafted him with the 16th overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Arkansas.
When he was released, Andrews maintained that he had a future in the NFL. He had nothing but positive things to say about Andy Reid and the Eagles organization, explaining that he understood their decision and apologizing to the fans.
"You guys'll see me somewhere hopefully in somebody's jersey in Hawaii and wherever the Super Bowl is," Andrews said at the time.
The Giants announced the move via the team's Twitter account. Andrews signed the deal at 1:45 a.m.
"Our personnel staff has been monitoring Shawn's progress for a while now," GM Jerry Reese said in the release, per Mike Garafolo of The Newark Star-Ledger. "He looks great and had a very good workout for us yesterday. He can play both guard and both tackle positions. We just have to take him slow for the rest of the preseason to get him into game shape. Shawn is very excited and grateful for this opportunity to play for the New York Giants."
Back in June, Andrews was drafted in the third round of the UFL draft by the Omaha Nighthawks, but he obviously elected not to go that route.
The Eagles do not face the Giants until Week 11 this season. The Birds are counting on Shawn's brother, Stacy, to start at right guard.
Earlier today, I posted on Eagles players that have something to gain against the Bengals.

How bad is the Giants O-line that they need to make this desperation move? I guess seeing Manning with blood pouring from his head the other night was enough to scare them into taking this risk..... topwonk
wow didn't think he was doing anything other than working out his fingers on twitter BBAX
I live in NYC and I'm looking forward to what the New York media thinks of the Twittering Andrew's sister. rob808pf
Wish the giants lottsa luck with this one ... ingy9
Just in time; after training camp! dansdigs
Interesting. I would have cut him from the Eagles a year before they did, just for injury reasons. But if he can get healthy, he'll have twice a year to shut up the fans who questioned his courage. One of the best in the NFL when he's fully healthy. tacklinjoe- Good- now he can finally earn the money we gave he by setting the Giants back a year or two. gob1234
does this mean he is "getting his michael phelps on" again ? ob18- Now the Giants can deal with Michael Phelps. djlen
Comment removed.
He had all the chances in the world with the Eagles. Good Riddance. Phillies_80_08
The Eagles need him back, don't deny that. jbruder02- By which week will this Andrews sister be on the IR with back pain? I am setting the over/under at week 6 and taking the under.
- Didn't take long for an idiot Michael Phelps analogy. Played man, played.
How is this a bad move for the Giants? It's low risk, high reward. If he flames out, no big loss to them. But, he has the skill set to be a big time player if heathly. Of course, the big question mark is their health. He has been out of football for several years, so his body hasn't taken a pounding and should be very fresh. It's definitely a risk, but one worth taking in my opinion. With all the isuses the Eagles have with their offensive line, I wish the they would have given him another shot. Let's face it, his brother is garbage as a guard and definitely not worth the money they spent on him. Worst case, Shawn would have provided some great depth. eaglegrn21
