Former Eagle Jeremiah Trotter rips Andy Reid's coaching abilities

On the whole, was Andy Reid a plus or a minus for the Birds?
He was a plus -- Nine playoffs are nothing to sneeze at.
He was a minus – Zero parades. ‘Nuff said.
I’m conflicted -- Wish he’d actually done a better job.

On Thursday, as part of Mike Missanelli’s Football Roundtable on 97.5 The Fanatic, former Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter called out ex-coach Andy Reid over his in-game coaching abilities, saying that he was often out-coached in big games.

"If it came down to both teams were even, talent-wise, I think the opponent's team would win if it came down to coaching," Trotter told Missanelli and ESPN's Sal Paolantonio.

"Andy Reid got out-coached in a lot of games, man, a lot of big games," Trotter continued. "Time outs, running the football, you know."

His play-calling decisions also affected the psyche of the defensive players and coaches, according to Trotter.

"As a defense, we understood we passed the ball too much. You know, there's times we're sitting over there like, 'Man, listen. Just get us a couple of first downs so we can get a break.' And I'm sure it frustrated Jim Johnson also."

Trotter spent a total of eight seasons with the Eagles (1998-2001; 2004-2006; 2009), seven of them under Reid, including all four of his Pro-Bowl seasons and both of his All-Pro years.

Trotter also spent time with the Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so he understands the landscape of the NFL.

So how does the 11-year-vet-turned-radio-host rate Reid as head coach?

"On a scale of one to 10, 10 being great, I give [Reid] a seven and a half or eight as a coach."

Who would be a 10? According to Trotter, that's Patriot's coach Bill Belicheck.

Like Buddy Ryan used to say, a defense's best friend is a running game. It gives them time to rest. Even Tom Brady understands the need for a running game.

NFL.com's Albert Breer spoke with quarterback Tom Brady ahead of the Patriots' Week 11 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Brady cites the run game as a major improvement for the team.

    "That's important -- we're running it efficiently."

"Running the ball has saved us in a lot of games."

This is too harsh - Buddy took a crumbling franchise and made it relevant again - but I agree in general that his legacy is quite overrated. For all the great defense his teams played, Buddy never won a single playoff game. And people hate on Andy because he didn't win a SB?

It's not hate, it's just a waste of 14 years. Buddy had 5 years and was fired after going 10-6 but Andy get's 14?? If I had my choice, I would have switched the years and kept Buddy for 14. And if we would have kept Reggie, we would have our Lombardy (or two)!

Don't forget Buddy's boss was Norman Braman, not Jeff Laurie. Braman was one of the worst owners the Eagles had maybe with the exception of Jerry Wolman.
Braman single handedly cost us the great Reggie White.
The man lived in Miami and really wanted to own the Dolphins. Never lived a day in the Phila. area.

The difference here is that a former player is saying it, that says a lot. it brings credibility to the fans complaints about Reid.

Now that Reid is officially gone, the truth is finally coming out. I wonder what other skeltons will be revealed in the coming weeks. It's interesting to see in recent commentary the scales tipped in favor of the Reid critics rather than the Reid supporters.

Yeah, let's see if any player, other than guy who acted like a baby, played like a complete dog in Washington and has been bitter ever since the Eagles let him go bc he wanted way more money than he was worth, steps up and has anything bad to say about Reid. The fact of the matter is that Andy Reid went to the playoffs 9 times, the SB, conference championships and he did it all while having good but not great rosters. The Eagles always had huge holes on their roster(still trying to figure out how NFL guys looked at last years roster and thought the Eagles were a playoff team. They looked like a 6-10 team at best.(published and posted in the pre-season, with reasons why I thought they had a weal roster. NO secondary, a QB who looked bad on tape, an atrocious offensive line, small wideouts, and all new LB's)

The FACT of the matter is is that Reid consistantly came up short time and time again. He rode the draft picks of Ray Rhodes (Trotter, Dawkins, etc,) to a super bowl appearance and it was all downhill after that. He is a poor evaluator of talent, a sub par game day coach and his pass, pass, pass philosophy is a failure. Once he got rid of the players he inherited and had to use the players who he evaluated, the team went downhill fast. We are better off without him and he should have been fired 4 years ago!!!

what team have you been watching? The Eagles are barely over .500 for the last 8 years. And who picked these "good, but not great rosters" - that would be Andy Reid. Who was in charge of these "Eagles teams that always had huge holes on their roster" - that would be Andy Reid. Who put this, at best, 6-10 team together - that would be Andy Reid. Who picked that weak secondary, small wideouts and atrocious offensive line - that would be Andy Reid. Who was so much smarter than every other coach and believed you didn't need a good middle linebacker or safety - that would be Andy Reid. Who was so much smarter than every other coach and thought he could turn a offensive line coach into a defensive coordinator - that would be Andy Reid. I could go on but you know my answer.

Perfectly stated. Glaring holes on the team every year, whether it was linebackers, kick/punt returners, safeties, receivers with size, etc. Any real fan who doesn't recall all the questionable roster decisions this clown made over the years is in denial. A weak NFC East his first five years, talented, inherited players, and a defensive wizard made this buffoon look good for a while. Reality caught up to him, though. I'll take my chances moving on, thank you very much.,

Trotter is only saying what anyone with clear eyes easily saw for themselves. Andy Reid was very predictable, I'll never forget that game against Denver about in '05 where Shannahan was so certain we were passing, he blitzed with everyone... To this day, I still don't recall seeing anyone drop back in coverage. That's not just predictable, that's laughably predictable. It was like something you'd do in a game of Madden, not a real life NFL game. I even remember hearing the commentators say how they never saw anything like that before. We lost that game 49-21 and it wasn't even that close. The Broncos had McNabb on the ground before he could even complete the second step of his drop. And let's not forget the time Keith Brooking called Reid and the Eagles predictable. His exact quote when talking about McNabb being traded: "We knew exactly what was coming on every play. A lot of that didn’t have to do with Donovan McNabb." That's not the whining of a malcontent. That's an opposing player after both blowing and shutting us out. He made that comment for a reason and it wasn't a gripe with the team. Lastly, they say action speaks louder than words. Despite always saying how much they loved him, Andy's players demonstrated anything but that on the field this past season. There's a difference between between not being able to play and not giving a darn. This team clearly fell into the latter category. Brian Westbrook saw it himself and pretty much said as much when interviewed. He of course used the PC comment that the players "weren't buying into the program" but that's a nice way of saying they didn't give a flying you-know-what. Think what you will about Trot but facts are facts.
