Five things to watch tonight

You won't see the starters Thursday night, but the preseason finale gives us a last chance to see Mike Vick before the regular season, plus the depth at cornerback.

Five things to watch tonight

POSTED: Thursday, September 2, 2010, 10:10 AM

We won't see the Eagles starters Thursday night against the Jets, but if you're tuning in anyway, here are five things to keep an eye on as the real games approach:

-- Mike Vick: The game will give the Eagles a last extended look at the man who would step in for Kevin Kolb if anything happens to the starter. Can he handle the offense better than he did against the Bengals?

-- Macho Harris: He started as a rookie. He’s on the roster bubble as an NFL sophomore. Harris is back at safety and, having missed the first two preseason games with injuries and played little in the third, has one last chance to make a positive impression.

-- The cornerbacks. Trevard Lindley and Joselio Hanson will likely get the starts with the first string defense sitting out. Lindley has impressed coaches with a few stand-out preseason plays. Can he do it consistently? Same question for Hanson, who has had some positive moments, but notably got beat deep twice.

-- Mike Kafka: You likely won’t see much more of the rookie quarterback for the rest of this year (and if you do, something has gone very wrong). But the Eagles like how quickly he has learned and he could go into next season as Kolb’s back up. He'll play the second half, which should be the last chance to see much of him before mini-camp 2011.

-- Jorrick Calvin: Acquired Monday, he arrived in time for Tuesday’s practice and Wednesday’s walk through. He basically has one night to make the team before Saturday’s deadline for cutting down the roster.

Hopefully Vick is good enough that some QB impaired team will trade for him as must have been the orignial plan. It seems unlikely that the team intended to pay $5 plus million to a backup QB. Calvin is probably playing for a spot on the practice squad since the Eagles would seem unlikely to go with 6 CBs and thus he would have to beat out Hanson or Patterson to make the team. Since Patterson has played better than Hanson this preseason Hanson might seem to be a bit vulnerable. But then Hanson is the first string nickle corner so he is probably safe. Harris has not made the team by his play but the team might just want to keep him anyway. It seems unlikely that he would beat out Demps who is the first backup at both safety positions. Coleman has lots of potential and has played well so they will keep him. If they keep Harris that is 5 safeties and 10 DBs which is one or two more than usual.

To Izzylang.. No offense, but there is NO WAY the Birds are going to Trade Vick now and rely on an unproven, untested rookie with the keys to this offense. Boy, you don't know Andy very well at all. Vick's here for the season, 5 mil or no 5 mil. And, You'll want him here if Kolb goes down. Next Year this year's Rook, WILL BE THE BACK UP. I do hope they keep Chad Hall within Reach. Gotta root for this Guy.

Vick and Kafka? They're both going to be on the team if they went 0-20 with 10 picks.

eaglesond, I think the "unproven, untested rookie" he was referring to was Kafka, implying that if Kolb got hurt and Vick wasn't here, Kafka'd have to start.

we have to hope Michael can play the position....becasue the offensive line is so weak, that Kolb will be injured by the 5th game and Micahel's legs and his knowledge of the offense may be our only hope.....scary

Root for Kafka. Because next year he might be a more consistent 2nd string QB than Vick. I do not believe Reid wants to keep Vick beyond January. Like UVharvey says, there's no way they let him go before then.

In case you haven't been informed this is a throwaway...I mean rebuilding...I mean RETOOLING season. Who cares? This FO is a joke. REID MUST GO!!! And maybe the "GOLD STANDARD" as well.

Yeah Vick's gone after this year and we'll be drafting/signing another QB to battle Kafka for 2nd/3rd string. He'll want a chance to start, and seeing how bad this OL looks, odds are he'll get some playing time this year to show other teams he can still play.

Question: Can Kevin Kolb handle the offense better than he did against the Bengals?????
