Last week, Andy Reid and Joe Banner walked a few Daily News reporters through the process they used in obtaining left tackle Jason Peters from Buffalo. They talked about seeing reports of Peters being disgruntled, checking to make sure their evaluation of Peters as a player was as good as they thought it was, and then making a phone call to the Bills. The way Banner told it, the Bills quickly rejected the idea of trading Peters. But Banner then asked if he could receive a phone call from the Bills if they changed their mind. The Bills agreed, saying that the Eagles were the first to express interest -- and, months later, they did call.

All of which is a long-winded way of saying that you have to hope the Eagles have already called the Denver Broncos and asked about wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

You know, 6-foot-4 Brandon Marshall.

You know, 230-pound Brandon Marshall.

You know, big red-zone target/Pro Bowl player Brandon Marshall.

His is the perfect stylistic complement to what they have. Of course, that doesn't mean the Broncos are trading him. Every indication, in fact, is that they aren't trading him, even though there are reports all over that Marshall is unhappy with his contract and with other unspecified problems with the team following hip surgery that will keep him on the shelf until training camp.

Think about it: after Jay Cutler whined his way out of town, it is hard to believe that the Broncos would agree to another whine-induced deal. The precedent would quickly become untenable. So they aren't likely trading him -- not now, anyway.

But there is always the off-season.

The Eagles are not dying for a receiver right now -- they really aren't. But you never know how things are going to play out -- who is going to develop and who isn't; who is going to get hurt and who isn't. And if there is any kind of a chance that this guy could shake loose, well, don't you want to get in line?

Joe, make the call now -- because you never know.

some of the info that has come to light over the past 2 weeks about what has happend behind the scenes has really been amazing! You can never have too many weapons....so yeah, why not! I do not always initially agree with how they handle their business, the end result is usually the correct course of action! Overall, this offseaon has gotten me REALLY Pumped for this season, just get me a healthy BWest by the end of September and it is Super Bowl here we come!!

Do they still have money? Wait, we are talking Joe Banner not Ed Snider.

Would be a great addition to the team. Have to wonder if Andy wants to deal with another cry baby WR though. I would love to have him though!!

oh yeah, great idea, let's get another WR cancer to poison our supremely talented and promising WR corps. maclin is young and looking for a role model and jackson's head is so big he is flirting with prima donna status. rather than surrounding them with the (seemingly) calming veteran presence of curtis and the focused, driven avant, let's send them the message "you guys are super talented..it doesn't matter how you conduct or carry yourself, someone will always take a chance on you." because it's not like that ever happens to WR's around the league or anything like that.

If the Birds somehow get him, offense averages 30 a game. He would be our Plaxico in the red.

Isn't Marshall in trouble with the law? He just did something amiss.

After the Eagles make this trade and give him a new contract, we can get Boldin out of Arizona and hand out another new contract, and any other WR's out there. I think we can carry 9 or 10 for the season. So Burress and Harrison aren't out of the question either, right Rich.

i would say go after marshall if we didnt draft maclin but we have too many receivers on the roster now. i would trade kevin curtis, 1st round pick, 4th round pick and see if the broncos would bite. but marshall is probably looking for a long term contract and hes not worth $10million per year. its tempting because he is a physical beast at the receiver position.

Awesome idea!!!! (slow blog day for you, Rich)- he want's a new contract (at least $10 a year) and is on thin ice with the league and on the verge of getting Pac-Man'd.

Let sleeping dogs lie...please. This is media garbage. The Birds are set and focused. Pure garbage.

It should be thoroughly explored. I would be saddened if Andy and Joe didn't commit at least a full week toward investigating all the pro's and con's (or pending criminal convictions.)

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles.
