Offense struggles in Eagles' loss

The Eagles' offense failed to get in the end zone in the team's 22-9 loss to the Bengals Friday night.

The holes in the Eagles' offensive line were evident Friday night as the Birds fell to the Bengals, 22-9, in Cincinnati.

With Todd Herremans, Nick Cole and Jamaal Jackson sidelined, the first-team offense failed to get the ball in the end zone in the first half. The first team didn't score a touchdown in one quarter of action against the Jaguars last week either.

Quarterback Kevin Kolb rarely found time to to drop back and look for his weapons. He was on the run for most of the night, completing 11 of 17 passes for 126 yards.

When Kolb was able to escape pressure, he found DeSean Jackson, who had four catches for 74 yards.

"There's a fine line there though," Kolb said of scrambling out of the pocket during an in-game TV interview. "There were a couple times I got out, I probably didn't have to, could have helped my offensive line out a little bit. But we've got to be able to do that. When it breaks down, guys have to get in scramble mode. We did that tonight and we can keep getting better at it."

Jeremy Maclin caught three passes for 16 yards and lost a fumble. He left the game with a shoulder contusion.

LeSean McCoy carried six times for 20 yards, but 17 of those came on one play. He had 3 yards on the five other carries.

The Eagles' first-team defense allowed a touchdown in the second quarter, but came up with a pair of interceptions - one by Dimitri Patterson and the other by Quintin Mikell. On the Mikell INT, Stewart Bradley and Patterson crushed Chad Ochocinco as the ball popped loose.

Joselio Hanson filled in for an injured Asante Samuel and was beat by Terrell Owens on a 43-yard gain.

Other observations:

Michael Vick and the second-team offense looked horrible. Vick went 1-for-5 for 6 yards and a pair of interceptions. The offensive line did not help him out either.

* When Maclin left the game, Hank Baskett took his place.

* Clay Harbor once again saw time as the second tight end with the first-team offense.

* Brandon Graham was a bright spot, coming up with a sack and two tackles for loss. They all came against the Bengals' second-team offense though, I believe. He played both inside and outside.

* Rookie Keenan Clayton came up with an interception in the third quarter. He continues to look good in coverage.

* It looked like rookie JaMar Chaney got some reps as the middle linebacker with the twos, and Omar Gaither moved to the WIL.

Darryl Tapp saw time inside and at right defensive end with the second team.

David Akers went 3-for-3 on field goals from 40, 25 and 48 yards, respectively. He's now 8-for-8 in two preseason games.
