The Eagles ranked 20th in the NFL in actual dollars spent on salaries from 2004 to '08, according to numbers obtained by Jason La Canfora, the former Washington Post Redskins writer who recently joined the NFL Network. The numbers are gross totals spent on player salaries and bonuses.

The Eagles spent $495.75 million, and La Canfora says the Birds are among the teams that "stand out, stringing together a good run without grossly overspending." He makes the same case for the Giants (No. 19, $497.63 million) and Bears (21st, $495.57 million). Of course, all three teams reached a Super Bowl during that span, with the Giants winning the title. New England is 10th at $513.31 million.

Conversely, the team at the top of the list in spending -- to no one's surprise -- is the Dallas Cowboys at $566.89 million and still searching for an elusive playoff victory. The Redskins -- backed by Daniel Snyder's cash -- are third at $547.37 million. Seattle is a surprising second at $552.42 million.

Pretty interesting list when you consider how the relationship between spending and success works in baseball, with the teams near the top of the list generally making the postseason with the usual exception or two every year.

Eagles linebacker Charleston Hughes has picked up his championship ring from last season with the Calgary Stampeeders in the CFL. Now, Hughes is hoping to be able to join the exclusive company of the four players to win both a Grey Cup and a Super Bowl. He signed a 3-year deal with the Eagles in the offseason.

"The goal is to have one of each," Hughes said. "That would be special."

Hughes is featured today in his hometown paper, the Saginaw News in Michigan.

This article is probably more geared to people like me who have lives, and don't care to waste time researching stuff like this on their own. This took me 30 seconds to read and now I can go about my life. If you prefer to dwell in the dark confines of a dungeon while staring at a computer screen, do it, don't click on the link.

I know these salaries include the 2004 season, but the Eagles record in the past 4 seasons was 33-30-1, and I would NOT consider that successful.

When criticized about the amount of Eagles salary cap space, Banner always replies with how much the Eagles actually spend on players (aka "committed cash") and has always stated they are in the top 5. I think Joe should explain why the Eagles are #20 or provide the actual figures that put them in the top 5.

There isn't a chance in hell that Joe Banner comes out and says antyhing about this article.

The Eagles are minting money. Yet they refuse to spend the necessary money to get the Eagles over the top and win a super bowl. With their TL on radio always justifying whatever the eagles do, and the stadium always sold out, they are laughing all the way to the bank.

ww2buff, the eagles had a great offseason, so chill out and let them play a game first before you start trashing them.

I can't believe people are complaining about the Eagles! No wait. Yes I can. This is the same town that booed Santa and thought John Street was such a good mayor they elected him TWICE!

Who cares? The city is closing pools, cutting back job programs and is owed in back real estate taxes what the egoes spend on salaries in the past few years according to your records.

These are facts. Joe Banner specializes in severely twisting facts. Listen....can you hear his spin machine starting up? Here's the thing: if they win the Super Bowl no one will give a hoot where they stand in payroll. In fact, I'd applaud their frugality. But not until then.....btw, how much do you think they pay Eskin to kiss their butts?

"Content to compete", they know they can sell games to the morons who tailgate every year no matter what.

Eagles are only 17.5 mill from 10th place. That comes out to about $3.5 mill a year. Not much of a difference to me. Or most of that could be from signing one free agent in that time period.

Just another fact that the Eagles don't do everything in their power to win and then try to shove the "Gold Standard" where the sun doesn't shine. That was hush money they gave to Mcpuke, becuase I'm sure behind closed doors he has the same complaint. Usually teams win a championship and then suck the money from the crazy fans. Looks like the Eagles apologists have taken crazy to another level.

Top three in spending, Dallas, Seattle and Washington. Sounds to me as though spending money is not the anwer to winning a championship. I wonder is the "Haters" can wrap there heads around that? Nah, probably not.

craig123........I would say spending wisely isn't something Dallas and Washington have done, but the big kicker is they have superbowl trophies. Like I said earlier, show us your doing everything in your power to win a superbowl, and maybe you will get the benefit of the doubt. Until then, quit talking this gold standard nonsense as the Eagles have had countless situations over the years to pick up a key players here and there, but mostly took the cheap way out. 33-30-1 in the last four seasons wrap your head around that "Mold Standard".

The top teams on this list have had little to no success. NE is 10th, and not that far ahead of Philly in terms of spending. It seems like Eagles fans would prefer to have Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder running their favorite team. You can have that - SWITCH TEAMS! Root for Washington or Dallas or Seattle, and take your negative attitudes with you. As it stands, you're a jinx to the franchise. Root for the cowgirls and revel in all the money they spend. BTW, the Giants spend only slightly more than the Eagles, which hardly accounts for their SB win against NE.

There are various reasons the Eagles haven't won a Super Bowl. Being too cheap isn't one of them. It might be worth it to shell out an extra 3 million a year for Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but seeing as how they're not available, the Eagles' approach is fine. Their players are millionaires. What they and many teams need to be called out for 365 days a year is how they treat the everyday workers, like the guy who got fired for saying one stupid thing.

Igotswagga, The Eagles record in the last 4 seasons with McNabb, the second most overrated quarterback in NFL history behind Joe Namath, was 26-22-1, which is not way over .500. Nice try though.

Joe Banner has one job and one job only - make Jeff rich and take a small cut for himself. Jeff probably has paid his mother back by now for her collateral for the Eagles buy. Eagles 33-30-1 mark says more for parity than anything else. Let's see what happens this year with revamped O-line $$$$, real FB, $$$$, Real Draft skill players $$$$$ real safeties, $$$$$ and hopefully someone to replace KK, Rocca. Two things the Eagles must do. Keep #5 and AR upright through January. Who cares about Joe Banner anyway.

It'd be nice to know these figures compared to where a maxed out salary cap would put a team at over the same timeframe.

Igotswagga, All you had to do was take the overall record in the last 4 seasons 33-30-1, and subtract out the McNabb games 26-22-1, and it yields a 7-8 record without McNabb. Of course you being mentally dysfunctional could not figure this out, so you came to the conclusion that there were 20 non- McNabb games. Furthermore, your assumption that the Eagles would have won 80% (16/20) of the non-McNabb games is of course outrageous. Although winning 80% is possible, it is highly unlikely since 80% of 15 games (12 wins) is slightly more than 2 standard deviations from the mean when compared to the Mcnabb games.

Maybe Joe Banner should be City Controller he seems to be able to get things running smooth enough that people line up for tickets, while paying his employees in the bottom third contractually. Sure they haven't won a 'Bowl but they have driven the value of the franchise through the roof and they do put on a nice show every Sunday. I just want to live in a city where it's clean, safe, and the services provided match the bill I'm paying, the Eagles pretty much give me that every season.

Interesting choice in years. If the researchers felt like doing a little more math, they could have presented the facts in different ways... like from 2000 through 2008, only the Redskins have spent more than the Eagles (see http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/totalpayroll.aspx?year=2000 ~through~ http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/totalpayroll.aspx?year=2008 AND do some math). I suppose you can come to different conclusions based on the years that you choose. Based on a "longer" view, the Eagles aren't cheap when it comes to spending on NFL salary. Not that it matters, for a couple of reasons: (1) There doesn't seem to be a direct correlation between spending and winning a Super Bowl. Pittsburgh Steelers ranked 4th, spent $776,357,549, and won two Super Bowls in 2000 through 2008; New England Patriots ranked 22nd, spent $732,677,326, and won three Super Bowls in 2000 through 2008. I could go on here. (2) Those who are convinced that the Eagles F.O. are cheap aren't going to be swayed by a simple thing like facts.
