The rankings are out, again. The headline on the story said that, according to Forbes magazine, the average NFL team is now worth just north of $1 billion. So pat yourselves on the back. You were wrong last December when you were beating yourself up about throwing away all of this money on an 8-8 team. You weren't throwing it away. You were doing some good for someone else.

But if you really look at the numbers, things get a little more interesting. Last year, the Eagles were ranked fifth in the NFL at $1.1 billion.  This year, they are down to seventh at $1.116 billion. The Giants and Jets, with their new stadium beginning to loom in the Meadowlands parking lot, have now passed them by, at least by a little.

But,  consider: the Giants are 6 percent ahead of the Eagles at $1.178 billion. The Redskins are 38 percent ahead at $1.538 billion. The Cowboys are 44 percent ahead at $1.612 billion. In a salary capped world, that isn't such a big deal. But if the NFL is insistent upon Armageddon with its union, the result of which might just be the elimination of the salary cap, what does it mean that every one of their division rivals is worth more than the Eagles -- and the Cowboys are worth 44 percent more?

Questions. And while the fans have already done plenty, it might be time for more. In an uncapped world, the Eagles might really need your help.

I suggest a beef-and-beer.

please. i don't think anybody is going to buy the excuse that the eagles can't get the high market free agents because Jeff Lurie has .2 less billion than Dan Snyder. stop making excuses for these cheap asses rich.

Cowboys and Redskins are worth more because the teams own their stadiums.

Our stadium is terrible, the team is always several million under the salary cap, season ticket holders pay full price for two pre-season games, $20 for parking, and the Philadelphia Eagles, Inc. hasn't won anything since 1960. That's worth $1.1B?! I guess I need to be content with my tobacco, oil, and pharmaceutical holdings.

RYAN GOT IT RIGHT. .2 BILLION LESS DOESN'T MEAN MUCH. IT'S STILL BILLIONS OF DOLLARS. CAN'T KNOCK THE EAGLE MANAGEMENT. LET'S FACE IT, EVERY YEAR THEY SPEND BIG BUCKS FOR PLAYERS AND IT SHOWS.

"and an ale is a type of beer. good god." Next thing you'll be saying something crazy, like Coors Light is a beer!

5280 is saying the truth that nobody wants to admit. the linc sucks. the other newer stadium are much better. the linc is downright ugly and not a great place to see a game and everybody knows it. the sightlines are awful. atleast CBP is beautiful. so they're batting .500 on the new stadiums

read the "final eight plan" of the CBA. top 8 teams from the year before are very limited in which and how many unrestricted free agents they can sign. while it helps to re-sign your own players, you still wont be able to build a team like the yankees. at least for the first 5 years or so (would the nlf stay uncapped that long?).

great shot @ Lurie on espn.com by rick reilly. It's just too bad he didn't have time to eleborate on knowlegable Eagles fans feelings about Joe Banner!

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles.
