Wide receiver Mardy Gilyard signed a futures contract with the Eagles, the team announced Friday.
Gilayrd, who was an All-American kick returner in college, could help solve the Eagles woes in that department.
Gilyard, who caught 204 passes at the University of Cincinnati, was drafted by St. Louis in the fourth round of the 2010 draft. He was cut before the 2011 season and then briefly picked up off waivers by the New York Jets before they released him five days later.
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound Gilyard was an All-American receiver in 2009 with the Bearcats after he had 87 receptions for 1,191 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was also an All-American as a kick returner in 2008.

Can't hurt to see what he can do in camp, after all the Eagles have had very good luck with guys from Cincinnati glove69
@william20, if this guy is such a stud why has no team signed him the entire year? It's just another nothing signing. JBinPA
Maybe Andy will put him in a position to make plays, Ahem tbonepsu
Chad Hall and Dion Lewis have no business on an NFL roster. Methinks Mr. Gilyard is another Howie gem. As mikegdj pointed out Gilyard could not stick with the Rams, arguably the worst team in the NFL. How does he help exactly? coloradoeagle

Hopefully he doesn't experience the bad breaks Jeremy Bloom and Jorrick calvin had..They were always just a step away from taking it to 'Da House'..We all know too that Reno Mahe make was cursed by the lights at Lambeau field that week 1 he botched those kicks..Andy for sure was right knowing he was the most versatile jack of all trades( good placeholder) 5th string RB in the league........ Mardy Gilyard was a good player at Univ. of Cincinatti, I don't know why his talents have not translated to the NFL, perhaps the third time and team will be a charm. His skill set warants a look see from the Eagles, especially given what we have (or don't) at the KR position. Sometimes it takes the right teamand right time, just ask jason Babin. Eaglehaslanded
Looked the guy up on youtube, pretty impressive. Don't know why he didn't stick with the Rams or Jets but will take him here. realtruth
SO WHERE HAS HE BEEN IF HE'S SO GOOD?
DONDEN31
@JBinPA, the Eagles tried to trade for him @ beginning during preseason but Rams voided trade, so there was interest. realtruth
The futures contract reminds me of Trading Places and the Dukes brothers losing their fortune on the OJ market. I the kid can bring something to the return game and handle both kick offs & punts for the Birds.
I don't want brittle DJax taking all the hits back there, let alone his poor decision making. DJ looks gassed at times from the extra work, plus he is a target for defenders looking to take him out. Would it kill Andy to dedicate some roster spots to specialists like this kid a la Matt McCoy. No, we keep Brandon Graham, Ronnie Brown and other wastes of roster spots all year. Plus, Andy may be able to dial up some quad and nickel WR sets and plays for him. NWBeachBum
As someone who has seen him play live in high school and college, he CAN contribute on kickoff/punt returns. He just needs the chance. Critics say he does not possess the speed, but I say nonsense. Plus, he can turn on a dime. metcardcollector
Let me play devil's advocate to the people claiming that he must be no good since he couldn't make the Rams' roster: it's possible that the Rams weren't very good because their GM and coaching staff sucked so bad. And as a direct result of sucking so bad, the GM and coaching staff made terrible roster moves. Just a thought. Anyway, I hope he can contribute to the return game as that aspect was brutal this past season. Penfold18
