Eagles' draft production by round

Among the issues for the Eagles when you look at their recent draft history is that they seem to be getting more production from the players they select at the bottom of the draft than at the top.

Part of that is because they have acknowledged they reached on some picks based on need rather than selecting the best player available, something they have said they will aim to correct.

When asked at the Senior Bowl about the trend – especially in the two drafts since Roseman took over for Tom Heckert, Roseman said, "That's something you have to look at."First, we've kind of overhauled our scouting staff in the last couple of years, and we've changed how we grade players and how we look at players. That's a work in progress. We feel that we're making a lot of strides. We're never going to be perfect in that regard. "

He acknowledged they might have drafted some players too high recently (such as safety Jaiquawn Jarrett, whom many observers were surprised to see go in the second round last year). Roseman said there are "times that you're pushing things up because there are [attributes] that you want" or positions where you have a need. "Those are the things that you've got to learn from and figure out," he said.

With that backdrop, we wanted to take a step back and see how the Eagles have been built, whether with players they selected or players selected by other teams, along with undrafted free agents.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter in what round you are selected, but whether you can play on Sundays, but it is interesting to look at this list.

There are 67 players on the Eagles offseason roster at this point. Of those, 46 were drafted by the Eagles or another team and 21 went undrafted. (Among that undrafted group, by the way, are Cullen Jenkins and Jason Peters.)

Of the 46 who were drafted, the Eagles have 17 players selected in the first three rounds, 19 players selected in the final three rounds and 10 players in the fourth round.

Here are the rounds they were selected:

First: 8

Second: 6

Best player at their position in the NFL was an UDFA - that should tell you something...

This is a cool idea for an article -- would like to see a historical scan of some of the Bird's all time greats and where they were (or were not) drafted.
Overall take from this article, though, is that on paper, the Eagles do not appear to be very good!!!

This isn't Eagles Draft Production. This is the Eagles Roster and where they were drafted, most by other teams. You can't count Free Agents as part of the Eagles success or failure in the Draft. What a Banneresque way of saying the Eagles have done OK in the Draft! They have not done well and never will as long as they are minus a real GM with talent evaluation skills. Good Luck with the "High Motor" pick on Thursday!

The only reason some of these players who were high round or UDFA are on the roster is because they blew the draft in the early rounds. The accounting firm of Banner, Roseman and Reid must really be greasing these writers to put a positive spin on the abysmal drafts the Eagles have had the last couple years. Instead of writes, they should call themselves fluffers.

LOL the 3rd round has been an epic fail. They have one ONE guy taken in the on the roster that they drafted, and he can't get on the field.

Just because these late round picks are playing doesn't mean they are any good. Would Jamar Chaney or Kurt Coleman be starting for ANY of last year's playoff teams?

At least 15 guys by my count drafted 4th round or later who are playing starters snaps, or at least heavy rotational players. If that's not a recipe for mediocrity, I don't know what is

    1. I'd like to see some kind of comparison to see how well the Eagles do in their rafting compared to other teams. 2. To my unscientific eye, it looks like Eagles actually do a pretty good job drafting offensive players, but a terrible job drafting defensive players.

Good point about offense vs. defense. Maybe they should draft offense, and fill out defensive needs with free agents!

You know what is interesting: take away the guys acquired via FA or trade. Then see how many of those guys are starters today. Pretty pathetic amount of starters on the team, which essentially shows you the Eagles FO (as of late) has been horrible in the draft. Definitely isn't coincidence that the team's record continues to backslide. One more bad draft, it's to the bottom of the division we go.

6 Eagles' draft picks, taken in first three rounds, are starting on this team. 8 were taken in the last 4 rounds, including the kickers. So 14 out of 24 starters were drafted by the Eagles, and only 25% of our starters were picked by the Birds in the first three rounds.

On ESPN they say the success rate for the NFL Draft is 30%. Believe it or not, the Eagles are one of the most successful teams being in the top 5 of all teams.

I would like to see how many Eagle drafted player leave and go to other teams and have productive significant careers.

considering that the roster from 2010 included over 30 players either 4th round or lower including free agents, the low rounds are where the eagles feast.....low round - low salary....perfection according to the gang of 3.....and why not. andy and coaches can't do much in developing the high draft choices either.......Can we name one offensive lineman that andy & co have drafted that turned into an all-Pro? How about a QB? Defensive Lineman? Linebacker? etc etc.
