Eagles-Panthers Up-Down Drill
The highs and lows from the Eagles' seventh straight loss, a 30-22 defeat to the Panthers on Monday night:
Nick Foles
DOWN -- In a season full of disappointment, the latest has been back-to-back uninspiring performances from the rookie quarterback. Any evaluation on Foles’ future has to come with the caveat of playing behind a rotten line. But he has not looked like the answer to the Eagles’ quarterback problem.
Bryce Brown
UP – Given the opportunity to log more carries, Brown was amazing and, well, not amazing. The running back set a franchise record for rushing yards in a game by a rookie, but he also fumbled twice. Brown will be back next season and should be used more than just to complement LeSean McCoy.
Cam Newton
UP – Newton has been erratic this season and kind of grump, but there’s still a lot of ability in the Panthers quarterback. He flashed it many times against the Eagles on the ground and through the air. The Birds could only wish they had that talent at quarterback.
DeMeco Ryans
DOWN – He has been the Eagles’ most consistent player on defense all season and their best run stopper. But Ryans has been just so-so in pass coverage and was part of two blown coverages when the Panthers opened up with back-to-back passing touchdowns.
Mike Patterson
UP – Welcome back, Mike. The Eagles defensive tackle, who returned to play earlier this month after January brain surgery, recorded his first sack on the season in the third quarter. The big guy was able to run Newton down.
Kurt Coleman
DOWN – The safety has been easy pickings this season, and not just for writers. Coleman was once again late with help in the Eagles zone. This time, his reaction time after Panthers tight end Gary Barnidge ran past Ryans for a 24-yard touchdown in the first quarter could have been clocked by sun dial.
King Dunlap
DOWN – The Eagles left tackle was abused by Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy and allowed an early sack. Dunlap later held on a two-point conversion, but the penalty was declined. He left in the third quarter with a knee injury but returned.
Alex Henery
UP – Here’s another Eagle that will certainly be back next season. In a year with few highlights, Henery’s progression as a kicker in his second season has been a positive. He set a franchise record with 19 straight field goals on Monday night.
Trent Cole
UP – Cole has been a shell of his former self almost all season, but he made a number of plays in the Panthers’ backfield. The Eagles defensive end dropped Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart twice behind the line in the first half.
