EAGLES ACQUIRE HOBBS

POSTED: Sunday, April 26, 2009, 2:54 PM

One day after saying he felt Sheldon Brown would take a professional approach to his bitter contract dispute with the Eagles, coach Andy Reid acquired a veteran cornerback.

The Eagles sent two fifth-round picks -- 137 and 141 overall -- to New England for Ellis Hobbs, a former third-round pick who was a starter for the Patriots in 2007 and 2008.

The addition of Hobbs gives the Eagles both of New England's starting cornerbacks from the team that went 16-0 in the regular season two years ago. The other, of course, is Asante Samuel, who signed a $57 million deal with the Eagles as a free agent before the 2008 season.

Hobbs, who turns 26 next month, has nine career interceptions, including three last season.

According to an Eagles source, this move does not mean the Eagles are going to trade Brown, who went public with a trade request Monday and made some strong statements in various media outlets the remainder of the week.

Like Brown, Hobbs said he isn't thrilled about his own contract. Hobbs, however, has just one year left on his rookie five-year contract with the Patriots. He will make $2.545 million in 2009.

"It's definitely frustrating when you see guys making certain amounts of money that you think you should get just as well and you deserve," Hobbs said. "That's especially true with some of the injuries I've played through: a torn shoulder, a torn groin. To take some of the blows I did from (Patriots fans) and to put it on the line day in and day out when I know some of the guys weren't doing that and to get the money I was getting, you're definitely not happy with it. It is what it is and I'm getting paid more than a lot of people in this world, so that will come."

Hobbs said he would be willing to extend his relationship beyond one season with the Eagles.

"If we can make this my home, I would definitely love to be here," he said. "I know it's not going to come easy. You have to go out there and prove it. Nobody wants a paper champ. These guys have seen me and the coaches said every time they watch film, there I am showing up and making plays."

I like this pickup. It puts more pressure on Sheldon, first off. Plus, Hobbs has experience both as a starting corner AND a kick returner. It adds some more depth to our special teams and secondary. This also means, I think, that they really want Demps to start over Sean Jones at safety--getting all these guys who can return kicks might mean they don't want to risk Demps and Jackson on returns anymore.

Considering he was a 3rd round pick, getting him for two 5ths, which we had six of anyways, is a pretty good value.

What's the appeal of Scheffler? He's a receiving TE who hasn't had a truly great season yet and who can't block for beans. In my mind, he's no better than Celek. Would you trade Sheldon Brown for a guy as good as Brent Celek? Plus, I'm just sick of giving Denver our players, or players that we wanted.

You knew it wouldn't take them long to give Sheldon Brown's starting job to someone else, but OF COURSE they won't trade him, because it's more important than anything else to punish him for speaking out. He'll sit on the bench all season, getting used sporadically at best, and they'll trade him next year after they've run his trade value into the ground.

As much as I would love to see them just cut Brown now, Business dictates a trade... But wouldn't it be great if they benched him all next year, then cut him... These teams need to take action at some point and cut off these Star of David Agents from ruining a great Gentile game.

I like the TE the Eagles drafted. The ONLY reason he dropped to 5 was the injury to the knee last fall. He was rated at the top before the injury. The Eagles have really improved the team this draft. With the addition of Hobbs who is an interception hawk along with his return ability, it will be a good year...

Watch out for Hobbs and Asante signaling defensive coverage to the Patriot's coaches in the 2010 Super Bowl. What...It couldn't happen?

everyone in new england was helping pack Hobbs' bags. They liked him as much as we liked G Lew and Reggie Brown ( who I assume is gone)

Very eerie the way this resembles Lito. Hutch said it right -- they're going to punish him, devalue him.

zwarte -- ellis hobbs has missed one game in his 4 year career. played 63 out of 64 games, and he's played every game the past two seasons. what do you mean, injury-prone?

Sheldon Brown has no faith in his ability. His salary doubles when he makes the pro bowl. Hasnt doubled his salary yet because you guessed it, he doesnt make pro bowls. He is already devalued by opening his mouth. He can hit. So could chuck cecil. doesnt mean you get a raise.

Sheldon you catch the 2 balls that hit you in the numbers in the NFC Championship game and maybe you would still be here. Your a goner and I hope it's to a team that is years away from winning.

Say what you want about Andy Reid....but one thing that won't be said is he's a push-over or can be manipulated by a whinning, crybaby player like Brown. He got Hobbs exactly for the reason if Brown desides to pout and dosen't give his all on the field. And as for Hobbs getting beat in the Super Bowl...so what!! Sheldon got beat or missed tackles many times. He should feel lucky that he played on the team and that he was getting the money he was. I'll give him props for the hit on Reggie Bush in the playoffs but what else has he done? The Romo interception last year against Dallas was more of Romo making a bad throw and Williams not knowing his head from his a$#. Between the two I'd take Hobbs 'cause he's younger, multitalented, and he's in the last year of his contract..which is a good deal for Philly 'cause Hobbs wants to play for somebody....and he's got just this year to show he can do it. Sheldon just hasn't learned from previous examples...you try and call the team's bluff....you lose every time. This is one thing the Eagles organization is good at....not being held hostage!!!

Hutch, I could not have said it better. The Eagles management are vindictive and will cut off their nose to prove their power. Another wasted player with probably little value in return when they dump him. The only thing in the Eagles defense is that the players need to stop taking long-term deals and less guaranteed money. Otherwise shut up. Your f-ing millionaires and I'm out of work. PhilCali

BTW it doesn't make sense for the Eagles to punish Brown. What good would devaluing him do for the Eagles? The difference between Sheppard and Brown was that Sheppard lost his starting job to Samuel and went into a snit. Brown decided to wait until after Sheppard was traded to make his move. Maybe trading him to Detroit for a third rounder is the next best thing to getting a second rounder

did anyone watch what Celek did in the POSTseason? the guy can catch the ball and get open as a TE... later on tonight... Total Recall. a man who doesn't know he's playing on the wrong team while everyone doubts his skills to be really good.

Brown is a better corner than Hobbs. That said, it's nice to have some insurance in case Brown decides to be a disruption this season.

Brown forced this move. What do you expect the Eagles to do? One of their players has basically threatened to become a distraction during the season. Smart move by the Eagles. Always likes Sheldon Brown before this, but he sounds like he's whining.

Why is Jeffrey Lurie being rich such a threat in this town? He risked hundreds of millions and made billions for himself - so what? He pours money back into the Eagles, and always puts a competetive team on the field. I for one hopes he ownes the Eagles for a long time. We WILL win a SB under this leadership!!!

Welcome to the business side of the NFL Sheldon, where all of you can and will be replaced. You should do the following: 1) Fire your agent who gave you this advice, and 2) get together with the rest of the NFL players and negotiate a real collective bargaining agreement that guarantees more veteran pay and after career benefits.
