Draft mockery 2: The Eagles will take ...

Almost every mock draft has changed its projection for the Eagles pick, No. 24 in next month's NFL draft.

Southern California defensive end Everson Griffen is a popular projection for the Eagles one month before the NFL draft. Here, he was celebrating a sack against Washington State in September 2009.

Much has changed since last month's tour of NFL mock drafts. The league held its scouting combines, free agents hit the streets, and some teams, including the Eagles, actually made trades.

No wonder almost every mock draft changed its Eagles pick.

Last time, every projection we found was for defense, except for one running back.

This time, some prognosticators are thinking offensive line -- speculation that might grow now that the Birds have set injury-plagued Shawn Andrews free. And this time a cornerback gets mentioned.

If the Eagles don't trade their first pick -- rumors still abound about quarterbacks Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb moving on -- Andy Reid and company will draft 24th on April 22, when the NFL televises the opening round in prime time for the first time.

Here are the latest guesses for the Birds' first pick (all made in the last two weeks), with four new possibilities first.

Keep in mind that some of these drafts preceded recent moves, like obtaining young defensive end Darryl Tapp while trading defensive end Chris Clemons, then cutting defensive lineman Darren Howard.

Center/Guard Maurkice Pouncey, Florida. 6-foot-5, 316 pounds. "The Eagles have a hole to fill in the center of their offensive line, and Pouncey can step in," writes Mel Kiper of ESPN. "He's not a mauler but is a cerebral, versatile talent who can play any of the three interior line positions. He's an ideal fit."  "I had this in my mock before the release of Shawn Andrews, but now it makes it even more likely," writes Matt McGuire at WalterFootball.com. "Pouncey reminds me of Andre Gurode because he can play both guard and center and has a tremendous skill set." Also the pick of Chad Reuter at CBSSports.com.

Tight End/Offensive Tackle Charles Brown, USC. 6-foot-6, 303 pounds. Picked by Pete Prisco for CBSSports.com. Former left tackle who has size and athletic ability to perhaps move back there in the pros. Possible "reach" at pick 27, remarks Scout Inc's Todd McShay in projecting him to the Dallas Cowboys for ESPN.

Cornerback Patrick Robinson, Florida State. 5-foot-11, 193 pounds.  "Robinson might not have ideal size for a corner, but he looked impressive against a variety of skilled wide receivers," according to Lou Pickney at DraftKing.com. Fifth-best cornerback in the draft, according to ESPN's Kiper.

Defensive end Everson Griffen, USC. 6-foot3, 278 pounds. Clearly the most popular prognostication this time around. "Great athleticism and tremendous upside, but he hasn't performed up to those standards on the field the past two seasons," writes Walter Cherepinsky at WalterFootball.com, adding that "Reid has taken a chance on underachievers before," such as Jason Peters, Stacy Andrews and Shawn Andrews. "A lot of untapped pass rush potential, but also brings the size to be a factor in the running game,"  writes Robert Davis at FootballsFuture.com. Could be a "solid pass rusher," and although a linebacker would be tempting, defensive ends "have more value in the first round," says Michael Abromowitz for TheFootballExpert.com. "Great blend of size and speed," says Scott Wright at DraftCountdown.com. Also the pick of Chris Steuber at Scout.com.

Linebacker Sergio Kindle, Texas. 6-foot-3, 250 pounds. Outside linebacker. Versatile, able to get to quarterback, says Scout Inc.'s Todd McShay for ESPN. "Incredibly quick off the edge, a strength he showed with 2.5 sacks in the BCS title loss against Alabama," wrote Chad Reuter of NFLDraftScout.com in projecting Kindle to the Birds last month.

Safety Earl Thomas, Texas. 5-foot-10, 197 pounds. InsidetheEagles.com updated yesterday by continuing with its February pick. "Thomas is a playmaker, but isn't a big hitter," wrote Scout.com's Chris Steuber in agreeing last month that Eagles could be looking for a replacement for Brian Dawkins.

Defensive end Carlos Dunlap, Florida. 6-foot-6, 290 pounds. "Has to improve his consistency to be a truly special player," but "Eagles like to have a deep rotation at DE," says NFLDraftBlitz.com.  Also the pick of Rob Rang at CBS Sports.com.

Saftey Taylor Mays, USC. 6-foot-3, 231 pounds. Picked this time by Clark Judge of CBSSports.com. "A physical safety who can scare opposing receivers and contribute to the rush defense," said ESPN's Kiper in projecting Mays last month. Fellow ESPN picker McShay agreed about "explosive hitting" but worried about "a bit of a liability in deep coverage."

Not picked this time around were Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, Clemson defensive end/linebacker  Ricky Sapp, Fresno State running back Ryan Mathews, and Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes.
