Don't expect Nick Foles or Michael Vick to start for Chip Kelly

If you were looking for Chip Kelly to declare who his starting quarterback was on his first full day on the job, then Thursday's press conference probably wasn't for you.

But there were words to be parsed and phrasings to be speculated upon, and the general sense from this vantage point was that Kelly's starting quarterback for 2013 isn't likely on the current roster.

"There is nothing that's on the board right now, there's nothing that's off the board now," Kelly said. "Our sole focus and goal is that we're going to put an offense on the field that's going to score points. . . . Whoever that is, I don't know."

Kelly, officially introduced as the Eagles' 21st head coach on Thursday, had nice things to say about Michael Vick and Nick Foles. He didn't crown the veteran or the rookie as the franchise quarterback either.

Neither Vick nor Foles is of that caliber, of course. The case once could be made that Vick was or potentially could be a franchise quarterback. He is slated to be paid like one. But the Eagles will certainly not pay Vick at his $15.5 million price tag next season.

The more pressing question with Vick's contract is whether the Eagles will keep him beyond Feb. 6. On that date, a provision kicks in that guarantees him $3 million.

"It's pretty obvious that there is a first decision to make," Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. "We do have time to make it and no decisions have been made on any person on the roster."

Foles, in six games down the stretch last season, showed enough promise that a case could be made to hand him the starting spot and roll the dice. If he were a first-round draft pick, the decision would be easy.

But there isn't much investment in third-round picks. And it's not like the Eagles can carry over all of what Foles learned in his first season under Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg. They certainly helped in his progression as a quarterback. But Foles must now learn an entirely new offense.

Conceivably, the Eagles could cut both and start over and it would cost them very little. More than likely, Foles stays even if he doesn't fit into how Kelly envisions his offense. The new coach said that he wasn't going to try and fit a pocket quarterback into a read-option spread offense.

Who will be Chip Kelly’s quarterback for the Eagles’ 2013 opener?
    Nick Foles
    Michael Vick
    An NFL veteran
    A 2013 draft pick

"Our offense is always going to be tailored to who's playing," Kelly said.

He may have no other choice but to play Foles. But if he watches the film from last season and doesn't see a starter in the 6-foot-6, 243-pound quarterback, Roseman made it clear that the Eagles would do whatever it took to get Kelly his starter.

"We told coach Kelly - and what we told all the coaches [they interviewed] - was that we would make sure that we had every resource to our disposal to get them the pieces in place that they felt they needed to win a world championship," Roseman said.

Getting that quarterback is much easier said than done. There is no Robert Griffin III in this year's draft - at least that's the general consensus with three months till the draft. There are no attractive getable free agents. There are a few backup quarterbacks - like the 49ers' Alex Smith and the Seahawks' Matt Flynn - who could be acquired via trade.

    Owner Jeffrey Lurie sounded optimistic.

"Nowadays there's a chance every year to find quarterbacks that can be successful fairly quickly," he said.

Kelly had great success at Oregon even though he didn't always have blue-chip quarterbacks. He certainly didn't have pocket quarterbacks. His last was Ricky Santos at New Hampshire from 2004-07. But that didn't mean his offenses weren't aerial.

"My quarterback last year - Darron Thomas, who is up in the CFL - we played in 14 games and he ran for 200 yards," Kelly said. "And everybody is like, 'You run a running offense.' Look at the statistics."

The Eagles hired the mind, not the scheme. But Kelly certainly has a prototypical quarterback in mind, or at least one who he believes can run his speed offense, which requires a lot of quick thinking.

Some have posited that the 25-year-old Vick would have been ideal for Kelly's system. But that Vick took as many sacks and had as many turnovers - quarterback cardinal sins in Kelly's eyes - as the aging one we've seen over the last two seasons.

Still, it's possible that the Eagles eat the $3 million guaranteed and keep Vick around just in case. What if Kelly sees something in the 32-year-old quarterback that makes him believe he can win with him? He wouldn't be the first.

He has less than three weeks to decide. Whichever choice the Eagles make in regards to Vick, it will be Kelly's first significant roster decision.

As long as it's not CONVick, I'll support whoever Chip starts. Although I'm "all-in" for Foles! Looking so forward to Eagles 2013!!!

When Chip made the comments about Foles in AZ, he couldn't have known this would happen. So it's hard to take those comments as anything but blowing smoke. Did he have a habit of saying that about other QBs? Did he really gush over Foles in particular or was he always nice to graduating pro prospects?

Here we go again. Another person calling himself a journalist who thinks he can read the tea leaves. Here's an idea for all of the so-called journalists who write for the Inquirer and Daily News. Don't predict what will happen. Don't hypothesize about what may happen. Just try reporting what does happen for once in your lives.

I absolutely agree with you, fentonhardy. Have they learned nothing from the coaching search reporting that they messed up?

Do you live your entire life like this.....all you do is criticize the writer. Just once make a remark about the story. This is the SPORTS section numb-nut. If you want to address the writer his email address is available. I am tired of reading your drivel....it's a load of c**p.

Djlen - thank you for your objective and well-articulated comment. I stand by my observation that this is another example of a reporter attempting to make the news, rather than report the news. Good day.

You are right, they have learned nothing. It's as if he was at a different news conference. I heard a load of good stuff about Foles' decision making, toughness, and accuracy. He said he's a big fan! Take a man at his word, at least for the first week, people..... There is no QB in this draft worth taking.... Chip has said repeatedly that he matches the system to the talent.... LISTEN next time.

DGR, I won't wallow into the Vick hating verbage, the fact is as you so eloquently stated~there aren't any
QB'S in this year's draft worth taking~the 4 th pick in the first round must be used to address a "NEED"~ CB,
FS, OT, OG, LB, etc ....if this organization & Kelly
draft by chance(?) GINO SMITH out of WEST VIRGINIA
with that 4 th pick ....OMG!

wow...you have no idea what you are talking about. his job isn't to repeat verbatim everything Chip said. that is what transcripts are for. his job is to offer his opinion from his point of view. it isn't meant to reconfirmed YOUR view.

you knock him for doing his job and you can' t even get your criticism right. what a joke.

MFPhils - thank you for your comment. I stand by my observation that this is another example of a reporter trying to make the news, rather than report the news. Your last attempt at a sentence is somewhat perplexing. If the kids you are referring to do not have keyboards, it is reasonable to assume that they do not have internet access, in which case they do not have access to the identified comments. Therefore, I do not understand how they would become angered. Good day.

Now what would bedpan say if he was not blocked??? Oh, I know. He would say, "The Eagles in 2011 get Danny Watkins. The Niners (10 picks later) get Kaepernick. So every time we watch Kaepernick excel over the next several years we can take solace in the fact that Fat Andy got us Danny Watkins."

Eagles should draft Geno Smith if he's available at the 4th pick. He's 6'3, 214, and has a career total of 98 TDs with only 21 INTs. He QB rating for 2012 was 163.9, while in 2011 slightly lower at 152.6. He's the REAL deal!

I agree. I don't follow college but after reading his eye-popping stats, he looks like an elite QB to me. Why is everyone saying there are no Elite QBs in this years class??
I'd say if he is there at #4 we take him. Foles is a good QB but not great and he doesn't fit the system.

We all got snookered for reading this. It's a compelling headline with nothing substantial in the actual article to back the suggestion. The reality is we don't know anything more today vs. yesterday about who will be the starter. I know that doesn't capture eyeballs but that's where we're at. McLane's piece here is all fluff.
