Do the Eagles need to consider drafting a QB?
Paul Domowitch
So, the question before us is do the Eagles need to consider selecting a quarterback in the first round of the draft next spring?
Absolutely. I know what you’re thinking right now. They need help at linebacker and safety. And if they do indeed get rid of DeSean Jackson, they also are going to need to find another wide receiver.
But the Eagles need to think now about life after Michael Vick. And they need to think about when life after Vick will begin. He’s going to be 32 next June. They’re really only financially committed to him for one more season. For all intents and purposes, he really signed just a two-year commitment. He received $20 million this season and is guaranteed $12.5 million more next year and another $3 million in 2013. If they got rid of him after next season, they would only take a $4.2 million cap hit in ’13 and a $2.8 million hit in ’14.
He’s been everything you worried about when they signed him last summer. Inconsistent. Has turned the ball over too many times. Hasn’t been able to stay healthy.
Assuming juniors such as USC’s Matt Barkley and Baylor’s Robert Griffin III and Oklahoma’s Landry Jones come out along with Andrew Luck, there are going to be some very good quarterbacks available at the top of the draft. Regardless of how the rest of this season plays out, the Eagles likely will have the wherewithal to trade up and get one of them. And if they continue to play like they did Thursday night, they might not have to trade up at all.
But they already have an extra second round pick from the Kevin Kolb trade with Arizona. If they trade Jackson as well as one of their cornerbacks, they will have even more picks to use to position themselves to get one of the draft’s top quarterbacks.

What about that kid that was Center for Widener? Andy could project him as a QB, and get him with a 1st pick no problem. thesource1975- Mike Vick is the QB for many years. Robert Griffin III is a good idea as backup. Barkely, Luck, just nother Klob. Tyrone7
- Careful Tyronne, your bias is showing again.
John Klink - John, Tyrone hasn't met a black quarterback he doesn't like, nor has he met a white qb he doesn't hate. JoeJanko
Draft a REAL NFL Quarterback who will be the foundation of a Super Bowl team for the next 10 to 12 years...no more fantasy Rent- A-QB like lousy 32 year old Vick....draft a REAL QB like Brady, Rodgers or Brees. frank105
YES YES YES and YES, and with the first pick. No way they can get Barkly so get that out of your head but this is a deep draft for QBS. Let Vick play next season and have the rookie learn for a year. You fans want a superbowl, it wont be with Vick so get a pocket passer with an arm and a future. I like kafka but he doesnt have the arm to make the deeper throws, just a fact. peteike
Nonsense, the eagles will not and should not draft a quarterback. a total reconstruction of this defense is imperative and the only way to accomplish that is through the draft. CosmoK
Get rid of Reid and hire a real football coaching staff. I'm tired of the emotional roller coaster with this management and want a new and fresh approach to building a winner. Enough already! walt1
Vick is getting to the same point in his career as McNabb was when he was traded. One leg injury or even a shoulder injury and Vick is not Vick anymore. Age and/or injury will certainly get Vick soon. Vick's career is more likely than not to be ended abruptly with an injury that effects his speed or throwing ability. Barkely is better than Luck and could be had with a move up in the draft. BUT, Reid is 100x more likely to trade his first round picks for the next five years in order to get Robert Griffin III. I would say they need other pieces more than a new QB. Vick may be older, but he spent a couple years in the slammer, where the physical punishment supposedly was less. He is very prone to injury, so we must have a good backup. If we had a big DT, a big DE, and three quality LBers, and even a safety who didn't need a compass to find his way around the field, we'd be good. 4thand10
@frank105. you do realize that brees was acquired via trade and that brady was drafted in round 6? you're rhetoric is completely idiotic and you are a true racist - that has already been well established on these message boards. CosmoK

Aaron Rodgers was the 24th selection in the FIRST Round...Brady was a SIXTH round pick.....so the Eagles can absolutely get a REAL QB like Rodgers and Brady in this draft...period. frank105
quarterback is not the problem with this team. well, maybe it is, but leadership and scheme are so grossly flawed that its impossible to say. but one thing that is certain is that the defense needs a complete overhaul. keep cole, petterson, jenkins, and asomugha - the rest are either too small or too mediocre. to use draft resources to select a quarterback (unless one of premium quality comes available) would not be smart, which is obviuously why youre on board with that decision. CosmoK
Barkley is the way to go. KId is a stud, but also a leader who helped USC stay at a high level through all the sanctions. We need guys like that who will get this team headed in the right direction. Trade Vick for draft picks... But before we draft have a Def. coord in place who is not in his first or second year. An old dude with skills who can help draft D players!!! dcrane
