Do the Eagles need to consider drafting a QB?

POSTED: Friday, December 2, 2011, 11:07 AM

So, the question before us is do the Eagles need to consider selecting a quarterback in the first round of the draft next spring?

Absolutely. I know what you’re thinking right now. They need help at linebacker and safety. And if they do indeed get rid of DeSean Jackson, they also are going to need to find another wide receiver.

But the Eagles need to think now about life after Michael Vick. And they need to think about when life after Vick will begin. He’s going to be 32 next June. They’re really only financially committed to him for one more season. For all intents and purposes, he really signed just a two-year commitment. He received $20 million this season and is guaranteed $12.5 million more next year and another $3 million in 2013. If they got rid of him after next season, they would only take a $4.2 million cap hit in ’13 and a $2.8 million hit in ’14.

He’s been everything you worried about when they signed him last summer. Inconsistent. Has turned the ball over too many times. Hasn’t been able to stay healthy.

Assuming juniors such as USC’s Matt Barkley and Baylor’s Robert Griffin III and Oklahoma’s Landry Jones come out along with Andrew Luck, there are going to be some very good quarterbacks available at the top of the draft. Regardless of how the rest of this season plays out, the Eagles likely will have the wherewithal to trade up and get one of them. And if they continue to play like they did Thursday night, they might not have to trade up at all.

But they already have an extra second round pick from the Kevin Kolb trade with Arizona. If they trade Jackson as well as one of their cornerbacks, they will have even more picks to use to position themselves to get one of the draft’s top quarterbacks.

I'm "all in" on Barkley! If getting Barkley means another 4 games of Vince Young then sign me up.

If the accounting firm of Banner, Roseman and Reid are making the picks, you can forget about linebackers until the third round anyway. If Lurie doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to give Reid his walking papers, he'd better strip Reid of any say in personnel matters, demote Roseman back too the mailroom, and duct tape Banner's mouth shut and tie his non-check signing hand behind his back. You reading the Tonner Jeff? Because whether you like it or whether you don't like it, learn to love it because it's the best thing going and it's the truth according to the Tonner.

Being Vick is locked up for $100M, if Barkley comes to the Eagles, Joey Nickels will be able to him a day old loaf of bread and a tube of Chris Wheelers toupee cream....

Call me crazy but right now I'd let the Broncos have 2 players of their choosing (except Shady) for BDawk and Tebow...

Absolutely draft a top quarterback, who will be here for 10 to 12 years....not like a rent-a- quarterback like 31 year old Michael Vick who has no connection to the this team or city....that was the start of the problems with this Eagles team, they signed Vick as the leader who has no loyalty or passion for this team or city, he just wanted his $100 million payday and now he has bailed out on us.

You are nothing more than a jealous loser, in each of your comments it shows. If it weren't for Michael Vick those issues with the oline would have been exposed last year, Vick covered those flaws quite well. You constantly complain about his contract, you didn't pay him, more than likely you don't even buy tickets. One thing for sure he got his contract in which he deserves, and another thing he didn't bail you, because you're not a fan but simply a whiner. Jealousy is always ugly take a look in the mirror.

Vick has been exposed as Vince Young has been able to camp out, untouched behind the Eagles o-line- the strongest unit on the team and the only one that shows up every week.

Whether it's Robert Griffin III, a Vicklike freak athlete with a higher passing IQ in the first round....or Dan Persa, a mobile do it all hustler (that would give us two backups from the same college, an NFL first) in the 6th, one thing is for certain...they will draft a QB in this year's draft...real strong position this year!

Trade a CB to get another 1-2 decent draft picks. Trade 2 second round picks to get back up into the first round. Use 1 of the first round picks on a REAL LB like Burfict or Hightower. Then use the 2nd pick in the first round on a solid QB. This draft has some decent talent behind Luck.

No. Why would they? The Eagles have a top tier QB in Vick and a prospect in Kafka. Currently, they don't have -any- NFL-caliber safeties and the offensive line (and Reid's terrible offensive scheme) is the major reason Vick is hurt so much. They don't need 'skill' position players. This off-season they can afford to trade draft picks to shore up some glaring holes.
