Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson is unhappy with his contract. (Yong Kim/Staff file photo)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- DeSean Jackson was not at the Eagles' first training camp practice Thursday morning at Lehigh University, a team source said.

Jackson can now officially be labeled a holdout.

This morning's practice -- a walk-through -- is closed to the media and fans. But as expected the Eagles' star wide receiver was not in uniform even though he is contractually obligated to be in attendance. Jackson didn't arrive at Lehigh like almost all of the Eagles on Wednesday, but he was given a grace period because of the NFL lockout.

Jackson's reason for holding out is no secret, although neither he nor his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have publicly stated the reason. He wants a new contract. Jackson is entering the last year of the four-year deal he signed as a second-round draft pick in 2008. He is slated to earn $560,000 in base salary this season.

Rosenhaus did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowl player, is underpaid compared to other similarly-talented receivers and the Eagles are likely to want to extend him at some point. But holding out against the Eagles doesn't usually end well.

We'll see how long Jackson stays away from Lehigh, but he will be fined $30,000 for each day that he misses.

Also, as expected, quarterback Kevin Kolb did not report to Lehigh. He is currrently the centerpiece of trade discussions between the Eagles and Cardinals so it is uncertain if the Eagles have excused his absence.

when will Drew Blowsinhouse learn that the Eagles do not respond well with a gun to their head. Let's see, what happened with T.O., or even Westbrook? If he doesn't show, he will not get a deal. Not because we don't like him or need him, but to avoid setting precedents for future players. Dumb move, especially since the F.O. has to condense an enitire off season of work in 4 days!!! Thanks for poisoning any player for us Blowsinhouse

Eagles don't negotiate with holdouts, especially with preemptive holdouts. some agents never learn.

I know DJax is the sexy story but he's not a concern right now. As long as he's in shape a veteran WR can step in at any time w/out losing a step. What I want to know is who are our LB's? Who starts at? How will we improve our pass rush? What's up at RT?

I don't necessarily think they even know at this point. My hope is that they bring someone in to coach Jarrett and Allen, maybe someone like Darren Sharper. What scares me is that they are going to rely on Marlin Jackson, who hasn't played a down in about 3 years now.

Rosenhaus is a blood-sucking leech who ought to be dealt with accordingly. He never acts in his clients' best interests, only in his own. It is a poor reflection on the intelligence of anyone who employs him. He has a gift for bringing out the greedy side of his clients. I'm not saying DJack does not deserve to get paid because he absolutely does but there is no reason for this hardball BS.

Kevin Kolb's a holdout and he's under contract. Right now, he's the team's backup QB.

    What say you?

Hopefully this is all for a few headlines and with a wink and a nod, Reid, Banner and them all know, he's gonna get his money. in this day and age a 23(?)yo, making way under 2 mil WILL NOT last a life time esp if he gets badly injured on the field or worse in camp. One rare case where it's not about his original contract it's about playing a VERY dangerous game for pay that will not support him or his family if something was to happen. They worked him as hard as any, reverses, Wild Cat, Punt returns. Again, the RARE occasion where it would be SICK not give the man a payday if they plan on keeping him.
