Like most NFL players in this strange offseason, DeSean Jackson is trying to stay in shape and keeping himself busy.

“I’m just trying to keep myself in great shape,” Jackson said Sunday during an interview on 97.5 The Phanatic. “I’m working out with my coaches, the coaches who have been training me since I was a little kid. I’m trying to stay active in the community. I can’t really sit around until the lockout is over. I need to try to do everything I can to be ready as an athlete when the lockout is over.”

Based on his Twitter feed, Jackson has been all over the place, including a stop in Las Vegas for last night’s Manny Pacquaio vs. Shane Mosley bout.

He will be back in Philadelphia on Friday for the 2nd annual gala to benefit the DeSean Jackson Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer, an organization he and his mother started after Jackson’s father, Bill, died from the disease in 2009.

Jackson said he has been in contact with the players who have remained in Philadelphia and are working out regularly in Cherry Hill.

“Everybody is trying to keep our team together,” he said. “Unfortunately we’re not able to use our facility and things like that … We’re trying to do everything possible to stay in shape, keep being a team and working out. During this time, you kinda miss it because we’re not with our teammates. Right now we’re not able to do what we need to do.”

The lockout also has delayed what presumably would have been a contract extension for Jackson, although Jackson said he will let agent Drew Rosenhaus handle all that when it is allowed.

“I know Drew has a plan and that’s the biggest thing, because we really don’t know when the lockout is going to end,” he said. “Drew has been keeping me patient and motivating me and trying not to have me focus on my contract. That’s’ why I have him, so he can do his job and do what he needs to do, so me, as a player can feel confident and know he will do the best thing possible for me. I just really pray and hope that he works it out. I believe in him and know he can work it out for me. That’s why he’s Drew Rosenhaus. He gets paid to do what he needs to do. And that’s’ why in my eyes he’s one of the best.”

Asked whether the deal was simply a formality at this point, Jackson stressed that Rosenhaus “will work it out … I know he’s been keeping in good contact with the Eagles. So far, everything's been positive. I feel he has a pretty good relationship with the front office.”

Jackson also touched on a few other Eagles issues:

* On the draft: “I think they had a productive draft … I think they got some young heat … I’m ready to go to camp and get this thing going … I feel very confident about it.”

* On Kevin Kolb: “He’s a great quarterback. He’s young … He’s a real down to earth guy … During my time with the Eagles, he’s showed me he’s so much of a leader and a very competitive guy. I really can’t [know] his future. Whatever it is, I think he’ll do great. I just wish him the best whether he stays with us or goes his own way."

Nice one Mike, for a young guy he has his head on pretty straight, seems that almost everyone who plays under Andy, except T.O., does as well, regardless of the agent or family influencing them. T.O. already knows he screwed up a good thing here, I do wonder how much was him or Rosenhaus in his ear. Either way, a man makes his own choices. I do not believe this will be a circus again, I think Drew realized he contributed to running his client out of town on a rail without getting that long term extension they really wanted the last he did business with Joe.

The kids a good player but hes still a punk. If he was my kid i would tell him whats what and that he discredited himself and his family during his last NFL network visit. Is this how you would want your son to act if they were in the NFL? , no thank you. We are going to ride him to the wheels fall off then send him down the road as soon as his mouth gets the better of him. J-Mac is better anyway.

With the hiring of Rosenhaus I smell nothing but trouble, regardless of what he says.

Agree with Geno D. Rosenhaus is big trouble and I wouldn't doubt that he already has a deal worked out elsewhere. Jackson's buddy-buddy act with T.O. is not a coincidence. Owens is a true-blue Rosenhaus puppet and no doubt did his best to convince Jackson to ask the Eagles for the sky, then bolt elsewhere when he doesn't get it. J-Mac is good, but not "better" than Jackson.

Les BowenLes Bowen has covered the Eagles for the Daily News since 2002. Before that, he spent nearly 13 years covering the Flyers. It took Les only a few seasons after the switch to figure out that there was no penalty box at the Linc, and that the time really wasn't his, despite what Andy Reid kept saying. Les came to Philadelphia and the Daily News from Charlotte in 1983. In the intervening years, he has pretty much lost track of NASCAR, and his accent. He, his wife Barbara, and their two sons live in Haddon Township, New Jersey. E-mail Les at bowenl@phillynews.com and follow him on Twitter.

Paul DomowitchPaul Domowitch has been with the Daily News since 1982. He has spent most of his nearly 3 decades with the paper covering the Eagles and pro football. For the last 10 years, he’s been a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a graduate of Wilkes University, Domo started his career in Texas, working first for the Midland Reporter-Telegram (1976-78), and then for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where he covered some god-awful Texas Ranger baseball teams. His first beat at the Daily News actually was boxing, which he covered just long enough to lose 2 sports coats to blood spatter before moving on to football. Domo and his wife Shelley, a University of Oklahoma grad who still hasn’t gotten over that Fiesta Bowl loss to Boise State 5 years ago, have 2 terrific daughters -- Allison, 28, who is an attorney in South Jersey, and Amy, 25, who works in administration for a professional baseball team.
