Could Eagles be thinking QB in draft?

MOBILE, Ala. -- With Michael Vick turning 32 in the offseason and Vince Young expected to move on in free agency, the Eagles might very well look for a quarterback somewhere in the early rounds, especially since they have an extra second-round pick, courtesy of the Kevin Kolb trade with Arizona.

Stanford's Andrew Luck is expected to become the top overall pick in the draft, and Baylor's Heisman Trophy winner, Robert Griffin III, is expected to go soon after, long before the Eagles draft 15th overall. In any case, neither Luck nor Griffin will be in Mobile this week, and what looked like an extraordinary QB draft class lost a little luster when Oklahoma's Landry Jones and Southern Cal's Matt Barkley decided to stay in school.

But there are Senior Bowl QBs who could interest the Birds, particularly in the second round or later. They include Arizona's Nick Foles, Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden, San Diego State's Ryan Lindley, and Michigan State's Kirk Cousins.

Foles, a transfer from Michigan State, hails from a school that has never produced a prominent NFL quarterback. But he's 6-5, 240, and is said to possess excellent tools.

Weeden, 6-4, 220, is intriguing in that some observers think he might be a first-round talent, but he almost certainly won't be drafted there, at age 28, having spent five years playing minor league baseball. Eagles fans no doubt will draw a parallel with Watkins, the ex-firefighter. Lindley is a 6-4, 230-pounder whose draft stock suffered this year when he managed to complete only 52.5 percent of his passes.

Cousins, 6-3, 205, had an excellent year and could be on the rise from his early third-to-fourth round projection.

Why don't the Eagles get a head coach first. The Pats are 4-0 at home in the AFC championship game. The Eagles are 1-4 in the NFC championship under Andy ( I can't win a big game to save my life) Reid.

That really seems an odd tact. "I can't win a big game to save my life". You see in order to get to the championship game 5x, you would to win about 2 dozen big games. really wish people would put some actual thought into their posts.

Reids got 10 playoff wins in 13 yrs. Harbaughs got 4 playoff wins in 4 yrs. Would the Eagles be better off with Harbaugh or Reid? I'll take the Ravens and Harbaugh over Reid and the Eagles talent-wise.

As an SDSU Aztecs alum, I got to see Ryan Lindley quite a bit. He is raw but good. He lost two great receivers to graduation after last year and was throwing to freshmen this year; there were a ton of dropped passes, which really hurt his numbers. That said, though, it's hard to see any of these guys being good NFL QBs.

Any of these guys give you just as good a chance of winning a Super Bowl as Vick or Kafka does, which is sad. That being said, Howie has his eye on a kid from D III who is a hidden gem that they can get in the 6th or 7th round

If they think Kafka is the number two QB they should be looking at a QB somewhere in the mid rounds. If this is the case I'd rather they find some young talent they can groom rather then pickup some old retread with no real starting potential.

@tpizza: You are not alone in your opinion. Right now, Tom Coughlin is being interviewed on his second trip to the Super Bowl while our Gold Standard, Pedal to the Metal, All In, Dream Team joke of an NFL franchise sits back, counts it's gate receipts and season ticket sales and dreams of what other junk to sell at Lehigh and Flight Night next summer. Get rid of this coaching staff, this front office and this owner and we might be onto something. Less then that, this bunch will never hold that Lombardi Trophy...

If Vick were white, no one would talk of replacing him. He has been a top QB in the league. All people want to do is blame the black QB and Hispanic defensive coordinator. I wonder why that is...

They will reach for a QB in the second round if they do not try and move up for the likes of a Michael Floyd (if desean isnt signed or even if he is signed). They can dump Vick after next year (especially if Reid is going too). I am fine with them taking an OT if one of them fall to 15 (especially if it is John Martin). We dont need a first round linebacker, we need a 6 year veteran linebacker (Mario Williams). I would be especially happy if they could bring in Safety Mark Barron. What we dont need is another Brandon Graham (shoulda been Earl Thomas). Either way it is what it is and we can only hope next year is finally our year.

Eagles are VERY UNLikely to draft a QB very high (rds. 1-4) IF they believe that Kafka is a viable future starting QB. Why should they then?

Instead they'll sign a veteran to b/u Vick and keep working with Kafka. Not that complicated ... really.

It's not the Quarterback with the Eagles. It's clear some of you have never played a down of football in your life. Some of you and the writers were lobbying for Spagnuolo to come back. There is no evidence that Spags is any better at putting together a defense than Juan. I don't understand why there are so many groupies for Spags.

His stats aren't evidence he's any better than what the Eagles presently have. With the Giants he inherited a stellar defense, or at least the pieces, in 2007, it's not like he hand picked that talent.

Dexter, Spags crafted probably the greatest defensive game plan in NFL history in that Super Bowl against the Patriots. There's your evidence that he's a better D coordinator than lousy Castillo.

And for the idiot who thinks fans want Vick out because he's black, you don't know this city's sports fans too well. We would root for the devil himself if he could get us a championship, so even if Eagles fans were racist they would want Vick as the quarterback if he was capable of winning close games and passing efficiently enough to win games which he has proved repeatedly throughout his career that he isn't.

    2) Ravens fans are frustrated w/ Flacco because he's white & went to Delaware.

If they ignor the Defensive side of the ball and use a 1st or 2nd round pick for a QB, they are dumber than I thought. The need for Linebackers and Safeties is glaring on this team and if they wait til the 3rd and 4th rounds to select either, they are idiots.

Reid believes he can WIN and score with the West Coast offense...the only problem is Montana, Rice and the SF defense is not on his roster.Teams that run this offense have Coaches smart enough to have a team that can play position football when they are ahead in a game.

1.Dump Vick. Never going to win anything with this guy.
    2. Pull out all stops in going after P.Manning. He is not going back to Indy. Eagles make sense for him--great offensive weapons with a chance to win it all with a real QB.
    3. Draft a developmental QB in mid round.

With all the talk about teams lining up for P. Manning, Eagles make most sense. Imagine him throwing to these guys. Also he would be able to stand up to dopey playcalling (please, please, spirit of Al Davis; please take Marty M) and execute his own plays. He knows more about offense than everybody on Birds combined.

That last comment was for Tyrone7. For all the people that like to bring up Vick and his $100M. You can't call him a $100M bust because he hasn't been paid $100M yet. He'll only get that amount if he plays out his Six year contract, which he won't. Only $36M is guaranteed. Was Vick a bust when he was carrying this team in 2010?

As long as the Eagles are committed to Andy's bizarre, impossible scheme of giving Jeff Lurie a Super Bowl victory on the cheap, this team will never reach that next level. It's almost enough (and I mean really, really close) to turn me into a 49'ers fan (I was born out there, but raised in South Jersey). All Andy will do is give us another Kolb, another QB in round two that every other team rated as a fourth-round pick. This crew makes me ill. Philadelphia Eagles fans deserve so much more.

Another thought. What the Eagles really need is not so much a DC or even a new coach (much as I dislike Reid), but a first-rate director of player personnel. They need a guy who can no to Andy and Howie Baby. They need a guy who can draft starters, with the long-term goal of developing those starters into position-dominating players. In other words, somebody like the guys the Steelers, the Giants, the Saints, the Packers and New England employ to win every year.

So Giants are in it again, nice job Andy. 13 years one SB appearence and now wins. Guess Lurie should not have stuck with you so long and hired COughlin instead.

How about the Eagles stop playing, lets build for the longhaul with their draft picks and do what it takes to get 2 impact defensive players. Impacted players, not Brandon Graham; another wasted pick by andy.

The "fire-Reid" lemmings can't see two feet in front of their faces. The players like him as a coach, more specifically, Vick likes and respects him. The way you handle this is by giving the whole thing one more shot. You have to. You set it up this way with Vick, the free agent signings, etc. If it doesn't work in 2012 then you blow it up. Changing the head coach at this juncture makes no sense, and anyone advocating otherwise is saying so out of emotion, not logic.

No one wants a 'project QB' here in Philly, nor should they. A young guy needs to come in and learn the system for a year, to be ready to step in and take over in 2013 for Michael Vick. For me, that QB is Brandon Weeden. He's 28, which is 'old' -- but he's mature, he's run a pro-style offense, he's dealt with a stud receiver at OK State (meaning temperament, wanting the football, and so on), and he has the size and arm to succeed in the NFL, in my opinion. He doesn't have a lot of wear and tear on him, and I don't think his mechanics require much tuning at the pro level. Seems like an excellent fit for a team who wants a seamless transition from one 'regime' to the next.

I am amazed how many people state how dumb the Eagles organization is, especially based on the post and suggestions I see on what the Eagles should be doing.. 90% of you making these posts were so in favor of what the Eagles did during last off season, but since it didnt work for now (because I believe it will) you were never in favor of it, and they should have done something else. So smart are so many of you, but if the Eagles were taking into account some of what some of you "I know how to get this team right" opinions, this team will be the next Rich Kotite Eagles squads. We all want to think we are smarter than the "Fat Man" as he is so much called, but if you were better, believe me SOMEONE in the NFL would find you, and you'll be working for someone instead of posting nonsense on here. Just either support the Eagles or get on the bandwagon of some other team of your choice.
