Chip Kelly's complaints about NFL Draft hype blasted by guy who really likes NFL

Chip Kelly voiced some general irritation with the hype of the NFL Draft this morning, which drew the ire of one national NFL analyst.

The NFL is a ridiculous entity. Any event throughout the year is pre-empted by months and months of pre-coverage and oversaturation, and then the actual event is held (in a location announced years ahead of time), and everyone is supposed to be as jaw-droppingly floored as possible by the NFL in all of its big expensive glory.

Chip Kelly voiced some general irritation with the hype of the NFL Draft this morning, his charming impatience with the default "hoop-la" setting of all things pro football surfacing with reporters as always - this time with Peter King of Sports Illustrated:

"What's the worst thing about the league? I said the draft. I mean, the hype that goes into the draft is insane. Totally insane. The biggest thing for me is that everybody thinks whoever you drafted or whoever you signed is now gonna be a savior. They come in just like me and you come in as freshmen in high school or freshmen in college, or your first year on the job at Sports Illustrated – you're not telling people what to do, you're just trying to figure out what room to go to."

"I think a lot of times the hype turns into really, really hard times for the individual who got picked, because there's so many expectations of everyone building them up to be Superman because they had three months to write about them and talk about them. Then when they get picked, they're a very, very good prospect, but there's a learning curve when you go from any job out of college into a company. If you take a job at Wells Fargo when you get out of college, your first day of the job they don't say, 'He's our first-round draft pick, he's the savior to the company!'"

Well, that didn't sit well with CBS Sports' Pete Prisco one bit. Prisco fixed his britches and stomped over to Twitter, where he put Chip Kelly in his place for saying a mean old thing about the league that pays him.

somebody needs to remind Chip Kelly that all the hype and stuff is the reason he makes millions per season
Don't like the hype? Go coach PE, ca roll in gym class and coach high school football for a stipend. Geez
The coachers who bitch about hype and things are way out of line. Fans want and crave year-round NFL hype. Just ask them, Chip.

Over-coverage of sports, like the NFL, is routinely mocked for its inability to provide true insight or even a new thought during the offseason's deadest hours. Maybe if analysts shut up for a second we'd learn to live in a world that didn't have talking heads barking out mock drafts and power rankings every 20 minutes. They've convinced people there is no limit to the new stories coming out of the NFL, when in actuality, it enters a dead period or two throughout the year just like everything else.

Prisco is also acting like Kelly bought a page of the Inquirer and went on a 5,000-word scree about how NFL Draft hype was a parasite of the sport. He made some offhand comments about something that pissed him off. It was both a correct sentiment and one in tune with the persona he's conveyed to the media thus far: "Let's get this over with, I've got s*** to do."

I have great respect for high-school coaches who do it because they love it. Think they would take the hype and the millions?

Now it's about high school coaches, too! How dare you insult them, Chip? How dare you take your unchecked rage out on our country's high school football coaches? If you came to Chip Kelly with the "whisper-down-the-lane" conclusions Prisco is muttering in your ear, he would blink a few times and probably just walk away because he is trying to coach a football team in the NFL.

If draft hype is worst part of NFL, what's the best. Chip? Answer: $$$$$$$

Coaches and athletes are reimbursed with volumes of money equal to the GDP of some foreign nations! Did Prisco just blow your mind with this fact?

Chip Kelly hates football and loves money! Chip Kelly is the Monopoly guy in a visor! Way to run DeSean Jackson out of town, Rich Uncle Pennybags!

In short, the sports media industry has become built on making a huge deal about everything related to sports, from the Super Bowl to LeSean McCoy's car to a mascot riding a carousel. If somebody starts poking holes in that process... it will probably be not at all affected, and continue spewing nonsense.
