Birds Didn't Rate on Boys' Big Board

POSTED: Tuesday, May 11, 2010, 6:52 AM

We're not anywhere near the first blog to take note of how the Cowboys, always eager to publicize their operation, posted images on the team Web site that contained their draft board on draft  day. Interested people (with much too much time on their hands) quickly found ways to read many of the names listed.

So, in a way, George C. Scott's darkest fear from "Dr. Strangelove" has been realized. They saw the big board!!!Jerry Jones makes a selection

From an Eagles perspective, this is interesting mainly in that Dallas valued at least a few Eagles draftees differently. Brandon Graham, the defensive end the Birds traded up to take 13th overall in the first round, was ranked as the fifth-best player in the second round on the Cowboys' board. Before you get too excited about that, the fact is, teams often vary wildly in their evaluations. Dallas, like the Eagles, has hit big with some picks in recent years and done much less well with others. It's a fact that all three of the DEs most people said were the draft's best went between pick 13 and pick 16. It seems really unlikely that Graham would have lasted until the second round, regardless of Dallas's opinion.

It's less surprising that Dallas ranked Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, the DE the Birds took in the third round, as a fifth-rounder; most people felt he went earlier than he was rated.

Here's a link to a blog that has a fairly complete listing of the names on the board.

And in closing, we'd like to quote Slim Pickens at the end  of the movie: "Yeeehhaaa!!!"

Jones is an idiot. Those cowpokes are the same as the rest of the NFL, hit on some, miss on most. What high-handedness! Can't wait for the cowturds to fail again.

Bird's don't rate on any teams big board. Roseman blew this draft. He got 1.5 starters (graham won't play on every dpwn) with 5 picks in the first 87. TERRIBLE, a wasted opportunity. He selected Graham that could have been gotten in the 2nd, also he gave up 3-for-1 to get him. He selected a TE in the 4th round when the team had 3-TEs already on the roster, and Andy uses 1 TE 99% of the time?! He selected more receivers than DTs or O-ineman; I thought the team was set at receiver?! His drafting strategy from start to finish was nonsensical. Eagles mgmt should be distraught with his performance; more importantly, the team will take a step-back over time because of his draft poor performance. He has taken the crown of bad drafting and poor decision making from Al Davis in Oakland. Heckert must be still laughing at Roseman's draft performance, at the guy who thought he knew better, and helped push him out of town.

lerze77 - Obviously you are a draft expert that knows for sure the draft is bad before they even play...All the experts have the Eagles Draft a solid B. Graham was easily a mid first rounder who would not have lasted to the eagles original 1st round pick. Nate Allen was a good solid pick as well. Riley Cooper (who I have seen play every down) was obviously the best player on their board at the time of the pick. I'll take 1,5 starters from any Rookie draft! Also, Roseman blew this draft - never judge until at least 3 years.

lerze77's post is living proof that the less one knows, the more certain one becomes. lerze77, think for one second. You don't scout the players. You don't see the players. You don't interview the players. You are not skilled or talented enough to be hired as a custodian for any football organization, but because you read a paragraph about in an article written by ESPN, you're now smarter than everybody else. Go away. Far, far away.

Looks like Jerry Jones loving those Penn State players. Loving those inflated pro day numbers they always put out. PSU 40 track is mysteriously one of the fastest every year and they only time them in one direction....

Birds needed a CB, S and DE. They traded up and got the DE in the first round. IMO you can't argue that, because the game today is all about pressure on the QB. Unfortunately, the end of the first round went poorly for them with the run on corners. With the top rated corners off the board, they got the S and traded down. If they had stayed put, they would have gotten the corner with their first round pick and the S with their second round pick. They obviously felt getting a guy who can rush the passer was more important than the corner and the safety, and frankly it's hard to discredit that strategy. Did they reach a bit through the middle rounds with the CB from kentucky and TO? Yeah, but IMO they made up for it in the later part of the draft.

Eagles could've dished those first, second and third round picks they essentially gave up to KC and took Eric Berry. They could've also taken Earl Thomas. I agree with lerze77, i hope Graham proves me wrong and becomes a great player, but to pass on those 2 guys is ridiculous.

I wouldn't put too much confidence in the photos. If you believe the Cowboy boards, only 23 players had first round grades, 16 second round grades and 23 third round grades. Most experts put the real numbers much higher than that.

@ lerze77: Generally I agree with you. That said, let's see how these guys pan out. If in a year or 2 we really got 1.5 starters out of this draft, then Roseman & Co. blew it big time. For all the talk and planning about gathering picks in a "deep" 2010 draft, I'm not feeling super great right now. Looks like they are throwing spaghetti against the wall and hoping some DE's & LB's stick.

it's far too early to judge how successful the Eagles draft was. However moving up to get an undersized DE who doesn't play every down and is not a run stopper doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I just never understand why the Eagles either draft or trade foe someone and then move them to a different position. They do it constantly. Why not pick up someone in a position of need and just leave them there?

Let's see here. Dallas wins a playoff game for the first time in 13 years against an Eagle team with half there starters on IR and now Dallas is smart? I don't give a F what Dallas thinks, says or does. As long as Jerry Jones is in charge, no worries.
