Birds' Chaney Finds Flyers-Pens Riveting

Eagles linebacker Jamar Chaney grew up in Florida and went to school at Mississippi State, never feeling the need to seek out a hockey game.

But with everybody talking about the Flyers-Penguins playoff series, Chaney asked an Eagles official if he could get a couple tickets to Game 3 Sunday. The Flyers' 8-4, 158-penalty minute victory was quite an introduction for Chaney and fellow Eagles linebacker Brian Rolle.

"No matter the sport, this was the best game I ever attend(ed) as a fan," Chaney tweeted Sunday. "Crazy atmosphere."

Monday, after finishing up his weightlifting on the first day of the Eagles' offseason conditioning program, Chaney said: "The fellows sitting around us kept us informed about what was going on." He said he had watched enough Flyers action on TV to know what a power play was, and most of the basic stuff, but he still couldn't get over the fact that guys fought and didn't get ejected, as they would in the NFL.

"Seeing how fast those guys are skating, how physical they play  -- you see it on TV, but it's much faster and much more exciting in person," he said.

Chaney said he is thinking about trying to experience Game 4 as well.

"I want the Flyers to go ahead and get it out of the way, get that sweep," he said.

Chaney was also happy to start the offseason program, which commences about a month later now under the new CBA than it did previously.

"Everybody's excited. Some of the guys, you haven't seen since the last game, or the exit meetings. It's always good to see everybody and make sure everybody's all right," he said.

Chaney underwent neck surgery after the season but said he is doing fine and hopes to be able to participate in postdraft minicamps.
