Asante's Agent Sees No Need for Trade
Les Bowen
INDIANAPOLIS -- Not surprisingly, Asante Samuel's agent thinks the Eagles ought to just keep their expensive triumvirate of cornerbacks and pay his client the $9.4 million Samuel is due to receive in 2012.
Alonzo Shavers, attending the NFLPA agents' meeting at the NFL Scouting Combine, said "a trade is not imminent, by any stretch," which is technically true, since NFL teams are not allowed to trade players right now. "I don't think his number is going to affect the scenario," Shavers said. "Philly's got money. Did they change owners?"
No, but they do have a salary cap to fit under, and they found trying to meld Samuel, Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie an impossible task last season. The assumption is the Birds will try to trade Samuel to get out from under the final two years of his contract, and to clarify their corner situation.
"They've got the cap room,"Shavers said. He's still productive. He's got two years left on his deal."
Also present at the meeting were the agents for defensive tackle Derek Landri, Kevin Omell and Harold Lewis. Lewis said they were scheduled to meet with Eagles general manager Howie Roseman Friday night. Lewis said Landri, who played in 2011 under a one-year, vet minimum deal, obviously would like to return, and it seems likely the Eagles want him back. No deal can be signed until free agency begins March 13, because Landri was on a vet minimum deal.
Ha, of course he sees no need for a trade. His man's due $9.4m and on the down side of his career. NFL means Not For Long, after all. He's made his money, especially given his disdain for tackling. PhillySubsMac
Trade him for a used goal post, it just might get in someone's way; unlike Assante dannymoe
Asante we will grant you your wish and trade you, our first round pick, and two second round picks to the Rams for Robert Griffin. eaglessuck@life
Nothing but love for Asante! He and Cullen are the two vocal team leaders on defense and by far he's best DB on this team. KEEP HIM PLEASE!
Go Eagles! Laughingaloud123
9.4 million will get you a top tier player unlike what you get with Samuel big red
Why does everyone in Philly want to trade someone as soon as he becomes a star? You would think it was coming out of your pocket. Larry Byrd
at least he can play corner, unlike cromartie. wtf were they thinking? the inmates are running the asylum at the eagles organization. go phils dreinterests
Of course the agent doesn't see the need for a trade; He'd be losing all that commission. The Eagles are freaking ridiculous at this point!! StJames888
Let's be honest, Samuel was our best corner back last year, and as for tackling, DRC and Asomugha are just as bad. It comes down to style. Does Samuel fit what we are going to do with our Defense next year? What type of coverage will Castillo employ most of the time? What does Bowles think of the technique the three different corners use? I don't think it as cut and dry as haters or supporters seem to think. I'm interested to see how it all shakes out. WON'T TACKLE BUT, HE WAS THE BEST COVER CORNER. Pete60
NA was playing out of position. If Samuel goes, that opens up space to fit DRC and NA where they play best. 1republican
Hey a-holes who say Assante doesn't tackle...he was 10th on the team last season in tackles...out of how many players? Don't let the number of tackles fool you...his position shows me that people up front can't tackle to save their lives. They're too busy running full speed at the QB, missing him 9.999% of the time and then taking another 30 yards to stop, by which time the play is over or they're so far out of position they can't do anything. Samuel is not the #1 problem. We know where it is, upstairs. MidStaterUXB
Trade Asante for a 4th round pick. That's Howie's favorite round for collecting Special Teamers or as the Eagles call them, Starters! younged
I don't care about Assante's tackling. He had a few hits last season and I wished he handn't done it. Too much risk for injury. The Eagles secondary needs to use its speed and gang tackle. Assante is a winner. He produces turn overs and he's done it in big games and at key moments. Get rid of one of the other two. MikeP
