If Jon Runyan (left) ran for Congress, he'd vie with Democrat John Adler (right).

Former Philadelphia Eagle Jon Runyan was well-equipped to take on imposing pass rushers during his illustrious NFL career.

Sources familiar with the Burlington County Republican Party say that there are more than a few insiders who think that the All-Pro lineman's also got the smarts and star power to take on U.S. Rep. John Adler in New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District.

"They've been champing at the bit for him for years," said the source, who asked not to be identified. "He's literally got a multi-million dollar name."

Citing sources of their own, www.PolitickerNJ.com has reported that Assemblywoman Dawn Addiego, R-Evesham, spoke to Runyan about the possibility of running for congress. According to the article, Runyan, a Mount Laurel resident, knows Addiego because their children attend school together.

Runyan has not spoken publicly about a potential future in politics and did not return phone calls for comment yesterday.

In an article in the Inquirer last month, Runyan, who had microfracture surgery on his knee, was adamant that he wants to return to the NFL as soon as possible.

Addiego, who told PolictikerNJ.com that she couldn't discuss Runyan, and Bill Layton, chairman of the Burlington County Republican Committee, did not return phone calls for comment.

Assemblyman Scott Rudder, R-Medford, said that he first learned of the possibility of Runyan running on the Internet but couldn't confirm whether the rumors were true.

"I think the most important thing we need to focus on is having a candidate who is ready," said Rudder, whose name also has been mentioned as a possible candidate.

"Whether it's Jon Runyan or another candidate, the 3rd Congressional District should rally around one candidate and avoid a costly primary," he said.

According to the source in Burlington County, Runyan is a regular voter unaffiliated with either party but who has appeared at fundraisers for Republican candidates in the past.

"It's not a far-fetched idea," the source said. "If they're gonna make a go at Adler, they might as well go big."

Last November, Adler defeated Republican Chris Myers, of Medford, becoming the first Democrat to hold the seat in over a century. Adler did not return phone calls for comment.

The 3rd District stretches from the Delaware River to the Atlantic taking in most of Burlington and Ocean counties.

Runyan is the perfect GOP candidate. White Male Millionaire. If your not a white male millionaire the party is not really for you. What's the rest of you guys excuse for voting GOP. There won't be one millionaire posting there support for Runyan. So anyone below this post in support of Runyan is just voting against there own financial interest. It's good to know the rich have your loyal support to make them richer. Idiots.

Great, another rich white Republican, is this one also going to try to interfere with a woman's right to choose?

To sjjr: The answer to your question is, hopefully, YES. By the way, how many babies have you aborted with a procedure that was not paid for with taxpayer money?

If the GOP loves Runyan, it may mean he needs to rethink how he sees the world. I liked Jack Kemp as a ballplayer, and he was a straight shooter in Congress, but at the end of the day, for whatever reasons, he supported a society of the rich, by the rich, for the rich. Bill Bradley was better, but only a little. Sports stars and other celebs don't tend to show much leadership in addressing poverty, peace and such. Big-time sports are not good life preparation. Peyton Manning is a great football leader, but I'd never pick him as a leglislator. He has no problem with the fact that he makes ten times as much as some guys on his team, for instance, or 200 times more than most people make.

Not a Runyan fan, but at least wait to hear his position on issues. If it is the same as most republicans, then he is wasting his time and money.

langx...you're a moron. the vast majority of politicians are millionaires and all have their personal interests in mind. wake up and stop buying into class warfare. taking from the rich is not going to make you any wealthier. the only way that's going to happen is for you to get off your a** and work hard, but somehow i think your just waiting for obama to cut you a check.

Why do you hate white people sjjr? Choose what, sjjr? I find it interesting that sports players are more often than not republicans. They actually have to work hard for their money.

The GOP is for less taxes FOR ALL, not just the rich. Bush's tax cuts took 10 million LOW INCOME RESIDENTS off of the tax rolls. The rich still pay the huge lion's share of all income taxes and Bush left in place a progressive income tax.

langx - what the H have democrats done for the "little people"? You must be referring to Obama wiping out that school voucher program for poor inner-city black children, right? They just keep em poor, stupid and angry. Maybe some day people will wake up and realize that the democrat party has USED the "poor" for power for generations. And at least GOP millionaires earned THEIR money through business in the real world. Democrat millionaires (and there are a lot of them)are almost exclusively heirs to wealth or scum trial lawyers feeding off other peoples' wealth.

Funny, why is it the ultra-rich - I'm talking Hollywood, banking moguls and billionaires - are almost exclusively liberal and/or Democrats? Jon Corzine, Warren Buffet, Michael Bloomberg (who was a Dem before he ran for mayor of NYC, now an independent), for example. The Democratic Party is the party of the ultra-wealthy, who use government regulation and taxpayer dollars to line their buddies' pockets.

Wow, total hypocrites! I didn't see anyone complaining about a rich white Democrat Governor! Please don't try to use the devisive rich vs poor, corporate versus blue collar argument. Don't hate the guy just because he earned his money.
