Don't Trust Bill: Don't opt out on McNabb

I am not Philadelphia, nor do I live there. For as long as I can remember, however, I have loved the great combinations your truly excellent city has perfected: steak and Cheez Whiz, Hall and Oates, and bitterness and loathing. Hats off, sincerely, on all three. Until recently, I couldn't get enough of any of them.

That's when the City of Brotherly Love taught me a lesson about limits. Not on cheesesteaks or "Sarah Smile," both of which I could consume on a loop for all eternity. No, I now believe there is a limit to the usefulness of bitterness and loathing. And the lesson came in the form of your Donovan McNabb.

Eagles fans should put a little love in their hearts for quarterback Donovan McNabb. Yes, he´s irreplaceable.

Eagles fans should put a little love in their hearts for quarterback Donovan McNabb. Yes, he's irreplaceable.
He wasn't very good against Oakland. And he wasn't very good again against Washington. And, as has happened before, there rose a chorus among Eagles faithful that McNabb was inadequate at quarterback. There were bitter and loathing protests that he isn't the quarterback to deliver a championship to Philly.

Talk about a conundrum: Here were spite and impatience and complaint - the very essence of the sporting life - being directed at a guy who is, essentially, irreplaceable. You heard me. Irreplaceable.

McNabb's not the guy? Whom do you want? Tom Brady. Not available. Peyton Manning? Can't have him. Brett Favre? You don't mean that. Now, I know a guy who can maybe get you Jake Delhomme. I'll bet the Rams would part with Marc Bulger. And those guys couldn't carry any of McNabb's protective equipment. He is not only your best option, he's an excellent option! The Eagles are always good, sometimes great (see last week vs. NYG), and McNabb is the biggest reason.

Don't get me wrong. Continue to hate, dear denizens of the Philadelphia region. Hate me (as if I had to ask). I'd be honored. But put a little love in your heart for McNabb. You'll miss him when he doesn't play here anymore. Ask almost every other team in football.

Now that we're past the "Hey, don't be so bitter and loathing" part, let's get angry about point spreads!

Chiefs at Jags (-6 1/2)

You want Matt Cassel? How about David Garrard? Just a guess that K.C. or Jacksonville would take McNabb for either one of 'em. And the booing on South Street would start before the plane landed.

Jags 28, Chiefs 20. There are games with playoff atmosphere and games with midseason NHL atmosphere. Which would you say this is?

Ravens (-3) at Bengals

Take the team with the destructive defense over the team that was supposed to stink but hasn't figured out that it does (yet).

Ravens 19, Bengals 14. This is a beautiful chance not to bet on a football game.

Redskins at Falcons (-10)

Atlanta showed more in a loss at New Orleans than Washington has shown since Joe Gibbs was the coach the first time. Ten points sounds like a lot, until you look up at the ticker on Sunday afternoon and the margin is 21.

Falcons 31, Redskins 10. If something seems too good to be true, sometimes it's not.

Cardinals (+3) at Bears

Anquan Boldin is hurt again, and that is a big drag for Arizona. But Steve Breaston's really good, and Larry Fitzgerald is a legend. The Bears' best chance is lousy weather, and it's always balmy in Chicago in November.

Cardinals 27, Bears 24. Viva Jim Otis.

Texans (+9) at Colts

He had high apple pie in the sky hopes.
"Hate me (as if I had to ask). I'd be honored." Why would we hate you? You've done nothing short of riding the National Media bandwagon that insists McNabb is something he is not (above average & our only option), and insists Philly fans are something they are not (rabid morons who don't know their elbows from their azzholes). I'm actually surprised you didn't go for the full package & mention Santa Claus too, are you even allowed to do that? Puketacular!

don played a smart game last week, but we have to play out the whole season,to see if he has finally decided to be a leader, not a jokester, leaders like roger staubach, joe montana, troy aikman are a few, they were dead serious on the field, you couldn't tell if the were winning or losing by the demeanor on the field....when big red and don play smart football,it's like day and night, this is all the fans want is smart football on a consistent basis.........wolf-out..

The writer has been making the same point I've been making about making McNabb relative to other. Often times, folks in Philly tend to be myopic. If they saw how few good/great QB there are in the NFL, they'd appreciate McNabb. lonewolf: I recall a story that Joe Montana told a joke during the SB about John Candy being in the stands. That doesn't sound "dead serious" to me. And I noticed you didn't include the Great and Powerful Brett Favre on your list.

Good to see a sensible writer.

Above average and only option don't go with 5 NFC Championship appearances. McNabb isn't Mr. Clutch (aside from 4th and 26 another come from behind, last second win doesn't come to mind). But he can dig you out of a hole. If you watched his performance in the Giants game in the playoffs last year you will see that he's the one that stepped up and got the offense going. He's better than a lot of QBs who did win the SB. He's in the upper echelon of QBs in this league right now. But talking rational to many Eagles fans is like banging your head against the wall, so I don't really even try anymore. Let the haters thrash about until they grow tired of yelling.

'joe montana told a joke in the superbowl',sorry but qb's say things in the huddle to keep the team loose, you have zero film of joe montana acting like a jokester on the field or the sidelines,,jayhouse,i know your trying to bait me into some mud slinging but it won't work,my friend,,as far as brett favre, all i can say he is one of the greatest QB's of all time,i know you agree with that.....

Funny! McNabb haters are a very vocal minority. We certainly wouldn't have wanted Farve of the last 2 years. Let's see how Farve's season ends this year. He most certainly has one of the most talented teams around him now. If he can't win it all with the Vikings, he wouldn't have better results with the Eagles. I would take Brady, Peyton and Brees over Donovan.

love mcnabb if you want, and he may be "the best option", but he will most definitely NEVER win a super bowl. he is way to inconsistent to be considered an elite QB. after 11 years in the league he still misses wide open WRs (mostly throwing balls at their feet). he saves his worst games for the conference championships when the Eagles are favored. and by the way, dont you think a lot of patriot fans were saying the same thing about bledsoe 10 years ago? no one thought his backup could do anything, and "drew is the best option" they had... well, we'v seen how far mcnabb can take us, how about we try something new...

What the heck is this guy talking about? He obviously doesn't follow the Eagles. THE EAGLES INVESTED A SECOND ROUND DRAFT PICK IN KEVIN KOLB. They didn't draft him to be a backup for four years and then leave via free agency. Kevin has proven that he's a talented QB. He' ready to play and will definitely take over next season. He's ready to take over now. With McNabb you never know. He could easily fall into another slump at any time.

Bill Wolff, I love you. Really, I mean it! Maybe not as much as I love Donovan, but a lot.

Was that thud I just heard wiff fainting at the thought of...dare I say it...yet ANOTHER year of DM at the helm of the Eagles? What ever will you do wiff? Another year of KK holding the clipboard, unless they trade his popgun arm to someone? Oh, the angst. Oh, the horror of it all. And that's reference 15 and 16 for "smart". OCD anyone? Read the article and learn wiff...read it and learn. BTW, anyway a QB can make the team relax is OK by me. I would have loved it if DM had used that phone in the Giant game to order in Chinese for the team or perhaps your favorite donut?. Get a life wiff. Do you really think you have any idea how the team views DM or are you just applying your bias to everyone else's? Yeah, thought so.

Phil Michelson, A-Rod, Peyton Manning, Bill Cowher, the Red Sox, Steve Young, Barry Bonds, and more were all in the "can't play under pressure or win the big one" category. They all overcame that label. Anyone who thinks DM can't do it can't justify that with anything but opinion, not fact. Saying it over and over doesn't make it so and the past is no indication of the future or ALL those people would not have won anything or performed well under pressure. Those are all facts.

Bill: Eagles always had low tier QB. Few fans are just confused how to react to a tier 1 QB :-) It's not their fault, they are just morons. Most Eagles fans understand and appreciate McNabb. Ticket sell has not gone down or TV viewership has not gone down.... do you want any more proof?

Oh, and let's not forget Elway too. He'll never win either.
