Report: Cowboys to be fined $250,000 over suspensions

The Dallas Cowboys' lack of discipline off the field is about to cost the team more than what suspensions will already cost them on the field.

The Dallas Cowboys' lack of discipline off the field is about to cost more than what suspensions will already cost the team on the field.

Because the Cowboys have three players suspended for various rules breaches at the same time, they could get hit with a fine in excess of $250,000 from NFL headquarters.

As ESPN's Adam Schefter writes:

With at least three players suspended for part of the 2016 season, the Dallas Cowboys will be subject to a fine in the range of $250,000, based on last year's club remittance policy.

The league still is formulating this year's fine schedule, which is based on the number of players suspended on a single team. Last year, any team with three players suspended - the position the Cowboys are in this year with linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive ends DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory - had to pay a fine up to $250,000.

The fines are not expected to decrease this season under the new schedule.

All three suspensions were handed down because of violations of the NFL's substance abuse rules. McClain will sit out the year's first 10 games, Lawrence will sit out the first four, and Gregory as of now will sit out four but could sit out 10 because of another recent substance abuse violation.
