NFL NETWORK draft analyst Mike Mayock once again breaks down the top draft prospects for the Daily News. He assesses the best player at each position, as well as a player who is rising up the draft board and a late-round sleeper to keep an eye on later in the draft.

Mayock, 55, resides in Newtown Square and is a graduate of the Haverford School. The former safety was a 10th-round pick of the Steelers in 1981 and played two seasons with the Giants (1982-83).

  • Name: Johnny Manziel

    School: Texas A&M

    Height, weight: 6-foot, 207

    40 time: 4.68

    Vertical jump: 31 1/2 inches

    Hands: 9 7/8 inches

    Round projection: 1

Mayock: "The two things you have to buy in with Manziel are his willingness to learn how to win from the pocket and whether he'll be OK as the face of the franchise. Those were the two main reservations I had as far as him being a top-10 type of pick. But his spontaneous playmaking ability overwhelms the rest of it. He doesn't like being confined. He likes those open spaces. The Missouri and LSU games were eye-openers with him last year because they used a mush rush against him and slowly pushed the pocket on him and he got frustrated and his accuracy went down. But I'm buying in that he's mature enough and intelligent enough to learn from that. I think he'll do enough from the pocket to give you the best of both worlds."

    THE RISER

    Name: Tom Savage

School: Pittsburgh (Cardinal O'Hara High School)

    Height, weight: 6-4, 228

    40 time: 4.97

    Vertical jump: 27 inches

    Hands: 9 5/8 inches

    Round projection: 3

Mayock: "There's a ton of buzz about him. His arm strength probably is as good as anybody's in the draft. I think he and [Virginia Tech's] Logan Thomas and [LSU's] Zach Mettenberger have the best arms in the draft. The entire country and certainly the entire NFL is becoming aware of his physical skill set. I think he'll go in the third round, but if he went higher, it wouldn't be a surprise to me."

    THE SLEEPER

    Name: Bryn Renner

    School: North Carolina

    Height, weight: 6-3, 228

    40 time: 4.87

    Vertical jump: 25.5 inches

    Hands: 9 1/8 inches

    Round projection: 6-7

Mayock: "I saw him at the Manning Academy last year. He's the son of a high school coach. He has a better arm than people understand. Two things worked against him this year. One, he got hurt. And two, the system the new coach employed didn't fit him. They were taking him out on third down and bringing in a more athletic quarterback and all those kinds of things. Nobody's talking about this kid, but I think he's a late draftable and is going to make somebody's team, and down the road, he could have starter's traits."
