Guard Allen Barbre will have to fight for starting job

PHOENIX - The Eagles still have all five starting offensive linemen on their roster from last season, but that doesn't mean they will be the starters in 2017.

PHOENIX - The Eagles still have all five starting offensive linemen on their roster from last season, but that doesn't mean they will be the starters in 2017.

Coach Doug Pederson said Wednesday that he hopes all five start, but he also mentioned Isaac Seumalo as "a guy that we want to get into the mix" when asked about left guard. That means veteran Allen Barbre will have competition. Pederson said Stefen Wisniewski and Chance Warmack will be in contention for a starting job as well.

"It just creates that competition that we're always looking for, and trying to find the best five going into the season," Pederson said.

There could also be a spot at center if the Eagles trade Jason Kelce, but Pederson said he expects Kelce on the roster in September. Wisniewski's new contract would suggest the team views him as more than a backup.

"It's another opportunity for him to compete on our roster," Pederson said. "He had six starts last year, and he filled a role that we needed last year. Going into this season again, the beauty of having guys like that, whether they're starters, backups, role players - whatever you want to call them - it just gives you depth at the position."

Filling Logan's spot at defensive tackle

Bennie Logan signed with Kansas City, creating an opening at defensive tackle. It sounds as if Beau Allen will take Logan's starting job next season.

"Beau had a lot of snaps last year, played quite a bit," Pederson said. "Obviously with free agency and Bennie not being here, yeah, it gives him an opportunity to step in there and really show what he can do, if he can be the guy and compete and handle that load."

Pederson said the Eagles will continue to have an eight-man rotation on the defensive line, so it's unknown whether Allen will take Logan's workload.

The Eagles released Connor Barwin, giving Vinny Curry a chance to step into the starting lineup. The team also signed Chris Long and could draft a defensive end, so there will be depth behind Curry and Brandon Graham.

"I think if you asked him, that's probably his focus is to come in and be that guy, be the guy that sort of takes that next step," Pederson said of Curry. "You want to see steps being made, that they're performing at a high level. From that standpoint, expect him to come in ready to go in April."

Extended stay out west?

The Eagles play on the West Coast three times next season - twice in Los Angeles and once in Seattle - and the team submitted a request to the league to play back-to-back games on the West Coast so it does not need to fly back to Philadelphia in between. The schedule usually comes out in mid-to-late April.

Daniel's a Saint

Former Eagles quarterback Chase Daniel signed with the New Orleans Saints, according to several reports. Daniel was released earlier this month and replaced by Nick Foles. The Eagles will pay Daniel the difference between the $7 million they owe him and his new salary.
