Brandon Brooks misses second game with illness

Eagles right guard Brandon Brooks missed his second game in three weeks Sunday because of illness. The unexpected absence in the 27-22 loss to the Washington Redskins forced rookie Isaac Seumalo into the lineup without practice time to prepare with the starters.

Brooks, 27, signed a five-year, $40 million contract with the Eagles in March after four years with the Houston Texans. He was hospitalized before the Nov. 28 loss to Green Bay because of a stomach problem. He also missed a game in December 2015 because of illness and has had a history of stomach problems and ulcers.

"It was a game-day illness," coach Doug Pederson said. "Something we just have to follow up with."

Long injury list

The Eagles lost five players to injuries: right tackle Allen Barbre (hamstring), running back Wendell Smallwood (knee), running back Darren Sproles (evaluated for a concussion), tight end Brent Celek (stinger), and long snapper Jon Dorenbos (wrist).

Barbre, who played right tackle because of Halapoulivaati Vaitai's knee injury, was replaced by Matt Tobin.

Injuries to Sproles and Smallwood left Ryan Mathews as the lone running back. Nelson Agholor replaced Smallwood at kick returner.

Inactive players

Wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham missed his first game of the season because of an oblique/abdominal injury. He did not practice all week.

The other inactive players were running back Kenjon Barner, linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill, offensive linemen Brooks, Vaitai, and Dillon Gordon, and defensive tackle Taylor Hart.

Barner was a healthy scratch for the first time this season. Paul Turner took Barner's kickoff-return duties.

DeSean's big day

The Eagles have lost five of six games to Washington since they released DeSean Jackson in 2014. Jackson, who had three catches for 102 yards and a touchdown Sunday, played in five of those games. He has 20 catches for 440 yards and two touchdowns against his former team.

"I wish I could do it every game if you ask me," Jackson said. "It's not only when I come back to Philly. I just feel like whatever team I'm playing against, or the opponent, that's what I feel like my nature is: a deep threat, vertical, down the field putting a lot of speed on the corners or safeties. I've just been fortunate that I've been able to come back and make some big plays against my former team."

Jackson is a free agent at the end of the season and there's speculation that he could be a good fit for the Eagles.

"We'll see what happens," Jackson said. "You never know how it'll play out."

McKelvin's pick

Cornerback Leodis McKelvin's hot-and-cold day included allowing the 80-yard touchdown to Jackson and returning an interception for a touchdown.

"It was something I really needed," McKelvin said about the interception. "They ran that play with me earlier. I just came back and [Redskins quarterback] Kirk [Cousins] threw the ball a little late and we made them pay for it."
