Eagles rookie Treggs stretches field in his first game

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Bryce Treggs made his NFL debut in the Eagles' 28-23 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday and gave the Eagles the deep threat they lacked in the first two months of the season.

Treggs, a rookie wide receiver who was claimed off waivers before Week 1, had been inactive in the Eagles' first seven games. After Josh Huff's release, Treggs moved up the depth chart. He took advantage of his opportunity with two catches for 69 yards, including a 58-yard reception that is the longest by an Eagles wide receiver this season.

"We knew their safeties played a little low and it was a one-receiver set, so [wide receivers coach Greg Lewis] sent me out there and told me to run fast," Treggs told reporters. "That's what I did."

On Friday, coach Doug Pederson said that he planned on playing Treggs this week even before Huff was released. Now, with one fewer wide receiver on the team and Treggs showing what he can do, Treggs' role could continue to grow.

"This was his first opportunity and he made the big play, had the other catch," quarterback Carson Wentz said. "Any time you've got a speedster like that, it can change what a defense has to prepare for. And so it will be interesting to see how we use him going forward."

Wisniewski steps in

Stefen Wisniewski made his first start this season at left guard in place of Allen Barbre, who missed the game with a hamstring injury.

With Wisniewski in the lineup, rookie Isaac Seumalo was active for the first time this season as the top reserve interior offensive lineman. He also played fullback on a fourth-down attempt.

Defensive tackle Bennie Logan missed his third consecutive game with a groin injury, and fellow defensive tackle Taylor Hart was out for the second straight week with an ankle injury. Linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill also missed his second game with a hamstring injury.

The only player to leave Sunday's game with an injury was safety Terrence Brooks, who hurt his hamstring. Left tackle Jason Peters injured his thumb, but he stayed in the game.

The running backs

Darren Sproles remained the Eagles' top running back, carrying the ball 13 times for 57 yards. He was also targeted on nine passes and had three catches for 14 yards.

Ryan Mathews, who is listed as the Eagles' top running back, had five carries for 15 yards and one touchdown and caught one pass. Wendell Smallwood carried the ball twice for 25 yards and Kenjon Barner's only rush was a 3-yard touchdown.

"It's really not by play design as much as it's just giving guys these opportunities in games," Pederson said of using Smallwood and Barner. "You saw a little spark there by Wendell. He did a nice job, and Kenjon scored."
