Smallwood 'didn't get touched' on kickoff return for TD

LANDOVER, Md. - Wendell Smallwood's 86-yard kickoff return touchdown in the Eagles' 27-20 loss to the Washington Redskins was the team's first touchdown on a kickoff since November 2014 and the eight-longest in franchise history.

LANDOVER, Md. - Wendell Smallwood's 86-yard kickoff return touchdown in the Eagles' 27-20 loss to the Washington Redskins was the team's first touchdown on a kickoff since November 2014 and the eight-longest in franchise history.

The Redskins were forced to attempt a longer kickoff than usual because of a celebration penalty after a second-quarter touchdown. So kicker Dustin Hopkins, who entered the game with touchbacks on 23 of 29 kicks, booted one that the Eagles could return.

"We kind of felt they would lay back a little bit when they finally had to cover one, so I just had to catch the ball and run," Smallwood said. "All the blocks were covered. I didn't get touched."

Smallwood, a rookie fifth-round pick who grew up in Delaware, added that it was his first kickoff return touchdown since high school. The Eagles lead the NFL with 20 non-offensive touchdowns since 2014 after scoring two on Sunday.

Logan exits with groin injury

Defensive lineman Bennie Logan left Sunday's game in the second quarter because of a groin injury. He was replaced by Beau Allen. Logan did not play in the second half.

"Any time a guy like Bennie, you lose him, it definitely weakens your troops a little bit because we like to rotate our guys up front," coach Doug Pederson said.

Pederson had no update on Logan's status after the game. The Eagles play the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday.

The Eagles also lost defensive end Marcus Smith to a groin injury. Cornerback Nolan Carroll suffered a stinger but remained in the game.

McKelvin still out

Cornerback Leodis McKelvin was inactive Sunday because of a hamstring injury. Rookie Jalen Mills started in McKelvin's place.

McKelvin has missed three games this season. He practiced Friday and tested the hamstring before the game, but the team decided to keep him sidelined.

The other inactive players were wide receiver Bryce Treggs, defensive end Steven Means, cornerback C.J. Smith, and offensive linemen Josh Andrews, Dillon Gordon, and Isaac Seumalo.

The Eagles played with only three active cornerbacks, making it a curious decision to keep Smith on the bench. Smith was promoted from the practice squad after Lane Johnson was suspended. The Eagles dressed five safeties.

Extra points

Running back Darren Sproles is now ninth on the NFL's all-purpose-yardage list with 18,337 yards, moving past Hall of Famer Barry Sanders. . . . DeSean Jackson had four catches for 55 yards and now has 17 catches for 338 yards in four career games against his former team.
