Pederson expects Lane Johnson to start on Sunday

The Eagles enter Week 1 of the regular season with Lane Johnson on the roster, and coach Doug Pederson expects Johnson to start at right tackle Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Johnson has been waiting for word from the NFL on an expected 10-game suspension for a second violation of the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.

"Right now, until I hear something further, Lane is my right tackle," Pederson said.

Johnson said he does not know what is taking so long. The wait has been agonizing, but the tackle now gets to block for Carson Wentz. Johnson said he hasn't made a decision on whether he would appeal whenever a ruling is made.

"It's just a long, dragged-out process," Johnson said. "I'm planning on going this week and playing good."

Turner on practice squad

The Eagles signed wide receiver Paul Turner and cornerback C.J. Smith to the practice squad after both players cleared waivers following their releases on Sunday.

The team lost defensive lineman Taylor Hart, who was reunited with Chip Kelly after San Francisco claimed him on Monday.

The Eagles rounded out their practice squad with fullback Andrew Bonnet, linebacker Don Cherry, and center Aaron Neary. They signed Quentin Gause to the practice squad in the morning but released him the afternoon after Turner and Smith cleared waivers.

Smith and Bonnet both went to North Dakota State, giving the Eagles two of Carson Wentz's former college teammates on the roster.

Extra points

Running back Wendell Smallwood passed the league's concussion protocol and returned to practice this week. The only player missing from practice was defensive end Vinny Curry (knee), who said he will play Sunday. . . . Pederson thanked all who reached out to offer condolences following the death of his father on Friday.
