The rookie quarterback missed his second consecutive preseason game with a hairline fracture in his ribs, but his health appeared to be improved during the strong showing. He made all the throws and moved around without any apparent problem, a good sign in his quest to play in the preseason finale Thursday against the Jets.

The throwing session was an important one for Wentz because the Eagles have only two full practices before the game. Coach Doug Pederson said Wentz must practice at least once to play Thursday. The medical staff also needs to clear Wentz for contact.

"He's in a position to possibly play next week," Pederson said. "He's still a little bit sore. We'll monitor that. We'll make sure he's rested in the next couple of days. And I don't want to jeopardize him by any stretch of the imagination there. But at the same time, if he's ready to go, he'll play next Thursday."

Missing in action

In addition to Wentz, the Eagles missed wide receiver Jordan Matthews (knee), defensive tackle Mike Martin (knee), guard Isaac Seumalo (pectoral), linebacker Joe Walker (knee), cornerback Aaron Grymes (shoulder), and defensive end Alex McCalister (calf). Stefen Wisniewski started at left guard in place of Seumalo. Chris Givens started at wide receiver for Matthews.

Saturday marked the season debut of starting linebacker Mychal Kendricks and rookie running back Wendell Smallwood. Smallwood left in the third quarter to be evaluated for a concussion.

Injuries

Defensive end Vinny Curry left at the end of the second quarter with a knee injury. He did not return. He said afterward the injury was not serious.

Defensive tackle Taylor Hart suffered a knee sprain in the fourth quarter.
