Eagles Mathews and Brooks miss second straight day

The Eagles practiced Friday without starting running back Ryan Mathews and starting right guard Brandon Brooks for the second consecutive day, and their absences could extend through the weekend.

Coach Doug Pederson called them both "day-to-day" but added that he expects them both back next week. Brooks has a hamstring injury. Mathews has an ankle injury he suffered before training camp started.

Logan up next

After re-signing Darren Sproles, the most notable free agent-to-be on the Eagles' roster is defensive lineman Bennie Logan. Howie Roseman, the executive vice president of football operations, said the Eagles "love" Logan and want him with the team going forward.

"He's someone we see here," Roseman said. "Just because someone doesn't have a contract right now doesn't mean they're not in our plans going forward."

Pads on

The Eagles will finally put on pads on Saturday. After two full-team practices that Pederson said served as a "ramp-up" period, training camp will intensify this weekend.

"You start with that conditioning test. You go to a lighter practice in the afternoon. You come back. You give them a little more intense workout this morning, and you build as you get to the actual padded practices," Pederson said.

The Eagles are also expected to wear pads for the first public practice on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
