Eagles to Bradford: You're the starter - for now

Sam Bradford learned about the Eagles' trade for the No. 2 overall pick before practice on Wednesday. He spoke with owner Jeffrey Lurie, top football executive Howie Roseman and coach Doug Pederson.

Bradford was told he would be the Eagles' starting quarterback this season even though the team made a blockbuster deal that is expected to bring North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz to Philadelphia if the Los Angeles Rams take Cal quarterback Jared Goff with the No. 1 pick.

Then Bradford went onto the field to practice for an organization that gave him a two-year, $36 million contract last month and is prepared to draft his likely replacement next week.

"Let me be clear. Sam Bradford is our starting quarterback," Roseman said. "We've told Sam that. We intend to support him, and the moves we made this offseason we believe will give us the chance to compete this season."

Roseman insisted that Bradford would not be shopped. He said the Eagles are not concerned with how the trade will affect Bradford.

"He's a pro," Roseman said. "I have no concerns about Sam's professionalism and his competitiveness."

The trade was announced after players were available to reporters, so Bradford was unavailable for comment. But Bradford is reportedly unhappy about the trade, according to an ESPN report that cited people close to him.

When asked on Tuesday about the possibility of the Eagles drafting a quarterback in the first round, Bradford said he was not concerned.

"If it happens, it's something I'll deal with when it happens," Bradford said. "But if it doesn't happen, there's really no sense in wasting time or thought or energy on that."

The Eagles have said they can be competitive this season even with a lack of immediate help coming in the draft. If Bradford plays well in 2016, the Eagles could create trade interest and recoup some of the assets lost in the deal. Or they could keep Bradford for the second year of his contract, although that would delay the clock for Wentz one more year.
