Jenkins' concussion 'not a big deal,' Kelly says

Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins missed practice Wednesday for the second straight day because of a concussion he suffered Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, the team said.

Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins missed practice Wednesday for the second straight day because of a concussion he suffered Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, the team said.

Jenkins was going through the league-mandated concussion protocol and was in uniform doing strength and conditioning work on the side during practice.

If Jenkins is out for the Eagles' game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, the team would likely turn to Chris Maragos at safety. But coach Chip Kelly did not sound as if he's expecting Jenkins to miss the game.

"It's not a big deal," Kelly said. "I think he should be back [Thursday], so we're not concerned about that."

Jenkins, 27, was not the only safety to miss practice. Jerome Couplin was also out with a shoulder injury.

Peters returns

Left tackle Jason Peters returned to practice on a limited basis. Although he is listed as having a back injury, Peters' quadriceps is actually what is bothering him. It is the result of a pinched nerve in his back. Peters missed the Cowboys game and considered himself 50-50 for the Dolphins game.

"I moved around good today and I felt good," Peters said.

He said he has had two weeks to rest the injury, so he wants to see how he'll do on the field. Peters said the way he feels Thursday and Friday will dictate whether he plays against Miami.

Ryans 'optimistic'

Linebacker DeMeco Ryans was a limited participant in practice and told reporters he is "optimistic" that he will play against the Dolphins. Ryans has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury.

In addition to Peters and Ryans, wide receiver Riley Cooper (toe) and offensive lineman Josh Andrews (head) were limited at practice. Andrews suffered a concussion during practice on Wednesday and will not play on Sunday.

Wide receiver Nelson Agholor (ankle) was a full participant in practice after missing the last three games, although he was a full participant last week and did not play.

Running back DeMarco Murray (groin) showed up on the injury report, but it did limit his practice work. Ryan Mathews was also a full participant with a groin injury.

Vandervelde returning

The Eagles released linebacker Brad Jones and plan to sign offensive lineman Julian Vandervelde. They needed a backup center after Andrews suffered a concussion. This is the sixth time Vandervelde has been signed by the Eagles, including the third time during the regular season.
