Marcus Smith left practice Thursday with a right hamstring injury. He had an MRI exam scheduled for Friday to determine the severity.

Smith limped off the field with Eagles trainers, hopped into a cart, and was taxied inside.

The injury occurred during kick coverage drills. Defensive coordinator Bill Davis spoke to Smith before he left the field.

Smith, the Eagles' first-round pick in 2014, could become the third outside linebacker this season. That's a key reserve role in the defense. The position has been ravaged by injuries during this camp, with three outside linebackers already lost for the season: Travis Long, Brandon Hepburn, and Jordan Dewalt-Ondijo.

Wolff absent

Earl Wolff was not on the practice field the last two days because he was meeting with a doctor about his sore right knee. It is not a good sign for the safety, who finished last season on injured reserve and missed the preseason opener.

"I don't look at it as frustrating," coach Chip Kelly said. "For Earl, it's frustrating. For us, we just have to make evaluations based on how they present it."

The injury could hurt Wolff's chances of making the 53-man roster. He's not a starter, and other reserves are getting playing time that could have gone to Wolff.

"There's that part of how much you care about the individual player, and it's tough," Kelly said. "But you still have to move on. We still have to be able to find eight or nine DBs that are ready to play when we go play the Atlanta Falcons [Sept. 14]. I hope Earl is healthy and is in that mix, but you never know."
