NFL: Tannehill signs $78M extension

Ryan Tannehill has signed a $77.7 million, four-year extension with the Miami Dolphins that keeps him under contract through 2020.

Ryan Tannehill has signed a $77.7 million, four-year extension with the Miami Dolphins that keeps him under contract through 2020.

The extension was announced Monday. Last month, the Dolphins exercised their fifth-year, $16.2 million option for 2016 on the quarterback's rookie contract.

The eighth overall pick of the 2012 draft has started every game in his first three seasons and improved each year. Last season, he threw for 4,045 yards with 27 touchdowns, and his passer rating was 92.8. All of those figures were career highs.

Brady takes a hit

Tom Brady's endorsement value took a hit following the release of Ted Wells' report on the New England Patriots' manipulation of footballs, according to the Davie Brown Index that measures celebrity attributes.

Updated polling by the Dallas-based firm, which produces the index known as the Celebrity DBI, was completed Monday.

It found that consumer trust in Brady dropped to 3,027th of 3,686 celebrities measured, from 967th on Feb. 5, just after he was named Super Bowl MVP amid the highly publicized controversy. Whereas he had been in the top third, on par with actors Cameron Diaz and Jon Hamm, trust in Brady now is equivalent to that of conservative commentator Bill O'Reilly and actor Billy Bob Thornton.

49ers' Smith retires

San Francisco 49ers star defensive lineman Justin Smith is retiring.

Smith's announcement is the latest blow to the 49ers this offseason.

Two other defensive stars have also retired in linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland. Coach Jim Harbaugh is also gone, along with running back Frank Gore, guard Mike Iupati, receiver Michael Crabtree and cornerback Chris Culliver.
