Herschel is son's biggest cheerleader

Herschel is son’s biggest cheerleader

HERSCHEL WALKER'S 15-year-old son is a star.

Which isn't surprising until you find out that Christian Walker is a competitive cheerleader, not a running back.

Herschel, who played three seasons with the Eagles, said he was perplexed when Christian first told him about cheerleading.

"I thought, like, 'Cheering at a game?' And he says, 'No, no, no. Competitive cheer.' " Herschel told CBS. "And I'm like, 'What? Like what is that?'

"I didn't know what that was. Then he's, [like] 'Oh, no. People turning flips and all this stuff. Dance and all this.' And I came out to see it. And I saw how athletic the kids were that was doing it . . . And I was proud that he was doing it."

Herschel said he and his wife, Cindy, who ran track at Georgia, go to all of Christian's competitions.

"I love him so much that if he never played football, I'm going to love him as much as I love him now," Herschel said.

Christian said some, who don't understand cheerleading, have made nasty comments.

"It just seems like they had a stereotype about cheer, that it was just for females." Christian said. "You have immature people . . . People that do not have a clue. So I'm not going to put them down. Because if I put them down, I become a bully."

Good-ell deed

Roger Goodell deserves a cheesesteak wit from Eagles fans.

In February, Jim McCusker, a starting tackle for the 1960 Eagles, died at 78. Goodell read an article that noted that McCusker's No. 75 jersey had been lost in a fire in The Pub, a bar he owned in Jamestown, N.Y.

That prompted Goodell to send a new jersey to McCusker's widow Mary, along with a note.

"I'm sorry for the loss of your husband Jim," Goodell wrote. "The article in the [Jamestown] Post-Journal was a fitting tribute to an extraordinary man. I hope this jersey can hang in The Pub as a reminder of the special man he was."
