Eagles Notes: Mathis, agent are hopeful of a trade

PHOENIX - Evan Mathis remains on the trade market. Although teams may be reluctant to give up anything for a player the Eagles could eventually release, agent Drew Rosenhaus said Monday that he hoped to help facilitate a deal this week during the NFL meeting.

PHOENIX - Evan Mathis remains on the trade market. Although teams may be reluctant to give up anything for a player the Eagles could eventually release, agent Drew Rosenhaus said Monday that he hoped to help facilitate a deal this week during the NFL meeting.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly said two weeks ago that there wasn't a player on the roster he hadn't discussed trading this offseason. Running back LeSean McCoy and quarterback Nick Foles have already been dealt.

But this is the second straight offseason in which Mathis has been on the trading block. Rosenhaus arrived at the meeting in Orlando a year ago looking for another team willing to deal for the guard and give him a new contract. But nothing came to fruition and Mathis, despite displeasure over his contract, reported for training camp.

Mathis signed a five-year, $25.5 million contract in 2012 and is slated to earn $5.5 million in base salary this season. While jettisoning Mathis would clear $6.5 million in salary-cap space, the Eagles would have two holes at guard.

Todd Herremans was released last month, but the Eagles have Allen Barbre waiting in the wings as his replacement at right guard. However, they don't have an immediate solution at left guard if Mathis were to be traded or released.

The Eagles haven't signed an offensive lineman in free agency, although the draft remains.

It would be difficult to replace Mathis, who has arguably been the Eagles' most consistent offensive lineman over the last four seasons. He missed seven games last year after he suffered a torn knee ligament but did not seem to miss a beat when he returned.

Mathis, who is training in Arizona, will be 34 in November, though.
