Seahawks staffer interviews with Eagles but stays put

PHOENIX - The Eagles interviewed the Seahawks director of college scouting, Scott Fitterer, for their personnel executive opening, but he decided to stay in Seattle, Seahawks general manager John Schneider said Tuesday.

ESPN had reported that the Eagles were expected to interview Fitterer, but there was not any confirmation that a meeting had occurred until Schneider answered questions Tuesday at Super Bowl media day.

"He spoke with the Philadelphia Eagles, kept it on the down low," Schneider said. "He's staying with us."

The Eagles have interviewed at least three candidates for a job that could have the general manager's title. Chris Polian, the Jaguars director of pro personnel and a former Colts GM, recently had a second interview and is considered a serious contender, according to an NFL source.

"He's going to be a good GM for someone," said Tony Dungy, the former Colts coach who worked with Polian in Indianapolis. "The thing that we did - and I think Chris was really good at and his dad [former Colts president Bill Polian] was good at - is it's one thing to be able to evaluate talent, but it's another thing to say, 'What does the coach want? You tell me what you need, and I'll go find that. Not the player that I think is good, but the player that fits with you.' "

Dungy confirmed that Eagles coach Chip Kelly reached out to him at the beginning of the GM search after owner Jeffrey Lurie gave Kelly authority over personnel earlier this month. He said Kelly asked for his take on a few potential candidates.

Brian Gaine of the Texans also interviewed earlier this month, but before the Eagles were able to have a second interview, Houston promoted him to director of player personnel.

The Eagles requested interviews with the Chiefs' Chris Ballard and the Buccaneers' Jon Robinson, but they were denied the opportunity by both teams. Sources close to both situations said neither was interested in meeting with the Eagles.

The Dolphins' director of college scouting, Chris Grier, is believed to have interviewed with the Eagles and remains a candidate. The Eagles' assistant director of player personnel, Ed Marynowitz, has been mentioned as a possibility, but he said last week at the Senior Bowl that he had not had an interview.

The Eagles have not commented during the search, although when asked at the Senior Bowl for a time line for finding a new GM, Kelly said: "When we find the right guy."
